LOCK HAVEN, Pa. - Lock Haven University math majors Leah Gray and Marcy Nesbitt presented their joint talk “A Riemann-like integral which generalizes the Lebesgue integral” to a large audience at the twenty-fourth annual Student Mathematics Conference at Moravian College. The conference was held on Saturday, February 20.
Their two-part talk introduced a new definition of the integral which comes from the work of mathematicians Ralph Henstock and Jaroslav Kurzweil. This new integral was first introduced in 1957, but it is still not widely known in the mathematics community.
Ms. Nesbitt and Ms. Gray are senior mathematics majors at Lock Haven University. Gray and Nesbitt conducted their independent study project under the direction of Dr. Charles Morgan, associate professor in the Mathematics Department.
The Moravian College Student Mathematics Conference attracts students and faculty from public and private universities throughout Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Maryland. Each year, Lock Haven University sends between ten and twenty mathematics majors to the conference. Dr. Jim Strayer, Professor of Mathematics, has been directing the annual trip to the Moravian math conference since 1994.
Lock Haven University is a member of the Pennsylvania State
System of Higher Education (PASSHE), the largest provider of higher education in
the commonwealth. Its 14 universities offer more than 250 degree and certificate
programs in more than 120 areas of study. Nearly 405,000 system alumni live and
work in Pennsylvania.
