Lock Haven University rolls out new logo: The Haven makes its mark

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. - Lock Haven University now has a new logo to go along with its tagline, “Small college lifestyle, big university education.”

The university has developed a logo for The Haven which can be used independently of the traditional university logo or in conjunction with it. While the university will retain the traditional “mountains, river, sunrise” logo, an alternate version includes the words “The Haven” across the bottom.

According to Keith O. Barrows, interim vice president for university advancement, for well over a hundred years, LHU has provided high quality education. It has also been noted for the close interaction between students and faculty. “Because of the institution’s warm and caring environment,” said Barrows, “over the years it has become natural to refer to LHU as The Haven.”

The new The Haven logo is intended to appear informal and friendly. In keeping with the newest trends in logo design, it does not use a standard type face. Each letter has been designed separately, and the words appear to have been painted by hand.

According to Mary White, director of marketing and communications, LHU’s traditional logo suggests the “big university education” part of the LHU brand. “The informal The Haven logo sums up LHU’s friendly and supportive campus community -- our ‘small campus lifestyle,’” she said. “Together, the two parts of the logo sum up LHU’s distinctive identity and brand.”

The combined logo made its debut at LHU’s spring commencement ceremonies. Each graduate received a luggage tag with the new combined logo and the words, “I’m going places!” In addition, the logo highlighted four letters in the name of the university, making the word LOVE stand out.

Highlighting those letters creates the message “Love The Haven.” “This isn’t something we’ll do every time we use the logo,” said Barrows. “But there are times – like commencement -- when it is just right for the occasion. It reflects the strong connection our students and alumni have with LHU.”

Barrows expressed his hope that we will soon be seeing Lock Haven University/The Haven luggage tags in on suitcases in airports and hotels across the country and around the world. “Certainly, our graduates will be going places in every possible sense. With an LHU education, we know they’ll go far.”
