LOCK HAVEN, Pa. - Technology and teaching center professional developers from across the Pennsylvania State system of Higher Education met at Lock Haven University’s Durrwachter Alumni Conference Center on July 15 and 16 to attend workshops and make plans for future collaboration.
Dr. Rey Junco presented research on the use of student social media in enhancing student learning. Dr. Paddy O’Hara gave participants an analysis of how to effectively and efficiently use emerging technology to enhance instruction. Drs. Zakir Hossain and Charles Jenkins presented ways to enhance the orientation and mentoring of new faculty. Dr. Punnipa Hossain presented a program on cross-discipline peer coaching. Dr. James Bean presented methods to enhance the planning and assessment of professional development.
Participants formed a team to create an electronic journal for the scholarship of teaching and learning in which faculty from across the system can publish their reflections and research on teaching methods and outcomes. They also created teams to enhance the sharing of development resources and vehicles such as a shared website and shared mini-courses on topics in teaching, technology and distance learning.
Dr. Bean, conference director, stated that the conference was well-received by participants who networked with each other under the shared belief that teaching, learning, and technology skills are the driving force behind creating well-educated graduates in a system of more than 120,000 students.
