Clearfield, Pa. - Last week, Dr. Michael J. McSkimming, assistant professor of criminal justice at the Lock Haven University Clearfield Campus, attended the annual meetings of the North American Wildlife Enforcement Officers Association (NAWEOA) in Cranberry, Pa. The conference, hosted by the Conservation Officers of Pennsylvania (COPA), had approximately 700 participants from the United States and Canada. Dr. McSkimming had an article entitled "To Display or Not To display: An Issue of Conservation Officer Safety" published in the journal, The Green Line, which was distributed to each conference participant. Lock Haven University is a member of the Pennsylvania State
System of Higher Education (PASSHE), the largest provider of higher education in
the commonwealth. Its 14 universities offer more than 250 degree and certificate
programs in more than 120 areas of study. Nearly 405,000 system alumni live and
work in Pennsylvania.
Special features of the conference included training sessions on shooting reconstruction, computers and law enforcement, interview and interrogation techniques, and man tracking. In addition to attending various sessions, Dr. McSkimming assisted WCO Vance Dunbar during his presentations regarding venomous reptile handling. The NAWEOA conference was an excellent opportunity for Dr. McSkimming to enhance his knowledge in conservation law enforcement, and to network with those working in the field. This will be particularly handy as he begins to build a track in Conservation Law Enforcement at the LHU Clearfield Campus.
Dr. Marianne Hazel, interim dean of LHU Clearfield Campus, added, “Dr. McSkimming’s connections with the state organizations and his continued professional development really ensure that his students receive the most current information and most recent research. We’re elated about the potential new track for our students, too!”
