River Cleanup nets 9.5 tons of trash: LHU partners with Clinton County Cleanscapes in cleanup project

LHU and community volunteers mobilize for a river cleanup.

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. - On September 11th, approximately 90 students and faculty members from Lock Haven University partnered with Clinton County Cleanscapes to clean-up a section of the West Branch of the Susquehanna River near the Great Island. Cleanscapes Executive Director Elisabeth Lynch- McCoy reported that 9.5 tons of trash and debris, along with 358 tires were removed from the river. Approximately 20 members of the community assisted in the clean-up by providing the use of their boats. Sunken Treasure Scuba offered diving equipment and divers to assist with the effort as well. Lynch-McCoy said that it was a very successful clean-up and that she received several messages afterwards from volunteers who shared with her what a powerful and inspiring experience it was for them. This is the university’s second project with Cleanscapes since the beginning of the school year in August.
