LOCK HAVEN, Pa. - Lock Haven University's Foreign Languages Department, in co-operation with the Office of International Studies would like to invite you to watch the German movie “Der Schuh des Manitu” (“Manitou’s Shoe”) on Tuesday, December 7 from 7 to 9 pm in Stevenson Library Instruction room on the main level of the library. The film has English subtitles. This is a free event.
Der Schuh des Manitu was an incredible hit at the box office in Germany in 2001. It received numerous awards and has financially been the most successful German movie since World War II.
The movie is a hilarious parody on Karl May’s Winnetou Western movies that were extremely popular during the 1960s. The movie stars a number of popular German actors such as Michael Bully Herbig, Christian Tramitz, Sky du Mont, Marie Bäumer, and Rick Kavanian.
The movie is about the Indian Abahachi and his blood brother Ranger, who borrow money from Falscher Hase, the son of the Shoshon chief, to buy a salon from the criminal Santa Maria. When Falscher Hase is killed by Santa Maria, Abahachi and Ranger are convicted of murder. They escape from the stake, but they now have to find the pieces of a treasure map in order to pay back the money.
This hilarious comedy is a wonderful family movie (not for children under the age of 12) with a lot of wit and unique ideas that are very different from American humor. This is a well done parody featuring top German comedians. The public is urged to share in the enjoyment of this blockbuster that attracted millions of viewers in Germany and Austria.
