LOCK HAVEN, Pa. - The Lock Haven University MountainServe Center for Global Citizenship partnered with the LHU Residence Hall Association (RHA) to do a turkey basket project for the Salvation Army.
The Turkey Basket program is a way to help families in need during the holiday season. Each basket includes everything a family would need to create a complete Thanksgiving dinner, from cranberry sauce to a full-sized turkey.
Chad Spade, Americorps VISTA volunteer for the MountainServe Center, had learned of the program through meetings with other institutions. Spade proposed the idea to Christine Wise, the advisor for RHA. Throughout the month of October boxes were placed in each residence hall, and each box collected a specific food item to make a Thanksgiving dinner. RHA also donated 150 dollars to help purchase the turkeys. The MountainServe Center also collected donations and did a fundraiser to help cover the cost of the turkeys.
In total, twenty-five turkey baskets were assembled and distributed to families in need. The Salvation Army was extremely grateful for the donations, and all the recipient families appreciated the gift of a true Thanksgiving dinner. Lock Haven University is a member of the Pennsylvania State
System of Higher Education (PASSHE), the largest provider of higher education in
the commonwealth. Its 14 universities offer more than 250 degree and certificate
programs in more than 120 areas of study. Nearly 405,000 system alumni live and
work in Pennsylvania.
