LOCK HAVEN, Pa. - Summer's coming, and there’s fun to be had! Lock Haven University is a member of the Pennsylvania State
System of Higher Education (PASSHE), the largest provider of higher education in
the commonwealth. Its 14 universities offer more than 250 degree and certificate
programs in more than 120 areas of study. Nearly 405,000 system alumni live and
work in Pennsylvania.
Lock Haven University’s Summer Happening children’s day camp has added new courses to its roster and there is a new schedule. The only thing missing is – campers!
Summer Happening is all about fun and learning. Who says that learning has to stop once you leave the classroom? This year, pottery will be made, photos will be snapped, puppets will be created, and munchies will be cooked and eaten.
The one-week camp offers educational opportunities for students in Pre-K through seventh grade. Summer Happening has proven to be a favorite among Clinton County students. With new course offerings and the return of many favorites, Summer Happening has something for everyone.
Summer Happening runs from July 11to July 15. Students may choose two courses. Class #1 will run from 9:00 to 11:30 a.m. Then there will be a 30-minute lunch break from 11:30 – 12:00, followed by Class #2 from 12:00-2:30.
Preschool and kindergarten campers may choose only the preschool or kindergarten course.
Tuition will be $140.
The Summer Happening deadline for registration and tuition payment is June 24.

PRESCHOOL (4-5 year olds) 9:00 AM – 2:30 PM If your child will be attending half days only, please indicate which time slot on the enrollment form. The cost for half-days: $75; the full-days- $140. This option is available for Preschool Camp only.
CHRISTMAS IN JULY Santa’s little helpers will shine while learning and reviewing preschool skills such as colors, numbers, letters and basic math concepts through songs, stories, crafts and reindeer games with a Christmas theme. Basic Spanish vocabulary also will be included in some festive activities. Enjoy the winter wonderland and learn hooves of information! KINDERGARTEN CAMP (Students who have completed kindergarten) 9:00 AM– 2:30 PM A CAMPING WE WILL GO! Calling all campers! Get ready for an awesome adventure as we go on a camping trip…in the classroom! Our room will be transformed into the ultimate camping site, complete with real camping gear! Campers will discuss safety issues, study animals, and star gaze! Objects form nature will provide many learning activities that will keep the campers captivated during their experience. Our camping trip will include the writing and telling of campfire stories and cooking s’mores and other gooey goodies. Children will remain with the same instructor for both sessions and will experience a unique introduction into the Summer Happening program. Instructor: Emily Miller, Assistant: Natasha Gorham
DANCING AROUND THE WORLD (Grades 1-4) 9:00-11:30 & 12:00-2:30 Come dance around the world with us! We will explore the elements of dance through various cultures of our seven continents. We will visit North (Central) America, South America, Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia and even Antarctica! Be prepared to kick off your shoes and step to folk dancing from different countries such as Brazil, Mexico, Egypt, Ireland and many more. You will learn the purpose for different dances of long ago through dance games. You will choose from a variety of instruments to make to accompany our dances. Get ready to show off your moves at the end of the week with a brief dance recital! Instructor: Jennifer Laubscher
MUNCHY CRUNCHY READING (Grades 1-4) 9:00-11:30 & 12:00-2:30 "We read a book....and then we cook!" Discovering the enjoyment of reading has never been easier in this interactive class. Each day, the students hear a short story, then incorporate an element of the book into a cooking experience. From edible volcanoes to chocolate chip pancakes, the experience helps to promote reading and increase comprehension. SUMMER HAPPENINGS PUPPET MANIA (Grades 2-7)9:00-11:30 & 12:00-2:30 I’m a puppet. You’re a puppet. She’s a puppet. He’s a puppet. Wouldn’t you like to be a puppet too? Show your creative and theatrical side by making hand puppets, paper mache, sock puppets and puppets of all kinds! Put on a show at the very end of Summer Happenings and show everyone what we’ve made. We will make puppets every day and you will choose the best ones to be in the final show! You will also take puppets home so you can show your family how creative you are! Instructor: Mary Carter
CAPTURE SUMMER HAPPENINGS WITH PHOTOGRAPHY (Grades 3-7) 9:00-11:30 & 12:00-2:30 Have you ever wanted to learn how to take a great picture? How about edit that picture so that it looks awesome? Then this session is for you! You'll use digital cameras and computer software to capture and edit your own photographs. All necessary supplies will be provided. Just bring your creative eye. SILLY AND SLIMY SCIENCE Grades 3-7)9:00-11:30 & 12:00-2:30 Silly and slimy…….we all love it. We have many things around our homes that we can easily create experiments with……so come discover all of the fun activities we will do. We will have a day for exploration and insect collecting, and we will create several concoctions that we can eat. We will also create things to play with, as well as make volcanoes and have loads of other fun. Science…..the all inclusive topic where anything goes! Be prepared to explore, get your hands dirty, and create some silly, slimy science! Instructor: Shelly Budinger
CLAY CAMP WITH SUMMER HAPPENINGS! (Grades 3-7) 9:00-11:30 & 12:00-2:30 Turn a lump of clay into a work of art! At Clay Camp children will learn the art and craft of clay while having fun and exploring their creativity. Various techniques will be taught including throwing simple pieces on the potter’s wheel, shaping clay into pinch pots, building coil vessels, clay decoration, and glazing. Instructor: Bethany Probst
INTERMEDIATE SCRAPBOOKING (Grades 3-7) 9:00-11:30 & 12:00-2:30 Have you ever wanted to learn to scrapbook all those cool photos of you and your friends and family? Well here’s your opportunity. In Scrapbooking for Beginners you will learn the basic tools, techniques, and vocabulary essential for scrapping your favorite photos. Scrapbooking tools and materials will be provided; however, you will need to supply between 20 and 40 photos to scrap. Bring your pictures and creativity. nstructor: Tanya Brooks
DINING AROUND THE WORLD WITH SUMMER HAPPENINGS!(Grades 3-7) 9:00-11:30 & 12:00-2:30 Experience deliciously delectable worlds of Russian, Bulgarian, Ukrainian, Turkish recipes through your belly and taste buds! This class will introduce young learners to the exciting world of Eastern European cuisine! Through their senses kids will explore the variety of child-friendly recipes, using all sorts of materials and ingredients. Games (for example, “tasting without looking, what fruit is missing?”) and stories, movies and dances will be incorporate into daily activities. Every lesson will be using interdisciplinary approaches to learning: Math (measuring in metric system the ingredients for a recipe) and Geography (tracing the origin of the foods), Music and Foreign languages!
