In the fall of 2008, the Policy Center on the First Year
of College
selected Lock Haven University as one of
30 colleges and universities to participate in a year-long project,
Foundations of Excellence® in the First College Year.

The Foundations of Excellence project is designed to
help campuses evaluate and improve the overall experience of first-year students. The work of the
Policy Center is intended to help both two- and four-year institutions of higher education enhance new student learning and retention.

Lock Haven University is engaged  in an intensive and comprehensive self-study of the experiences of new students at the university. Vice President for Student Affairs Dr. Linda D. Koch said, “We will evaluate our
own policies and practices using the Foundations of Excellence model, and based upon our findings, develop an action plan to improve our students’ learning, success and persistence.”  The outcome could make Lock
Haven one the Best Practices Universities for first

NCATE’s dual mission is accountability and improvement in education preparation. The NCATE accreditation process establishes rigorous standards for teacher education programs, holds accredited institutions accountable for meeting these standards, and encourages unaccredited schools to demonstrate the quality of their programs by working for and achieving professional accreditation.

In NCATE’s performance-based accreditation system, institutions must provide evidence of competent teacher candidate performance. NCATE accredited colleges of education are expected to ensure that teacher candidates know their subject and how to teach it effectively.

NCATE is a non-profit, non-governmental organization, founded in 1954. More than 30 national associations representing the education profession at large make up the council. The associations that comprise NCATE appoint representatives to NCATE’s policy boards, which develop NCATE standards, policies, and procedures.

The U.S. Department of Education recognizes NCATE
as a professional accrediting body for colleges and universities that prepare teachers and other professional personnel for work in elementary and secondary schools.
