ECED100     INTRODUCTION TO EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION

An examination of the historical, theoretical, and developmental foundations for young children, birth to 4th grade.  While providing an orientation to early education of young children, emphasis will be on programs, current issues, families, community, and cultural diversity.  Restrictions Upon Student Registration:  15 or more credit hours or permission of instructor.

   
ECED101     CULTURES OF CHILDHOOD

An introduction to the complex social and cultural factors that influence children's development and learning as well as the ethical guidelines that determine professional conduct and development.

   
ECED119     FIRST YEAR SEMINAR FOR EDUCATION STUDENTS

Designed to embed education program requirements into a required course and to support student achievement of Education program requirements.  This course reviews campus services, certification requirements, and provides students with an overview of teacher education at Lock Haven University.

   

ECED120     OBSERVING AND RECORDING (changed to ECED200)

An introductory course concerned with the use of observation and record keeping strategies to improve, maintain and extend educational programming for children.  Prerequisite:  Successful completion of freshman level professional and early childhood education required course work and a declared major in Early Childhood Education.

 

 

ECED150 __ DIVERSITY IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF INFANTS, TODDLERS AND YOUNG CHILDREN

Designed to offer an examination of the influence of culture, environment and context on development of infants, toddlers and young children across physical, cognitive and social/emotional domains of development.  Prerequisite:  PSYC111 with a C or better or permission of instructor

   
ECED200     OBSERVING AND ASSESSING YOUNG CHILDREN (previously ECED120)

An introduction to observing, documenting and assessing young children (birth-five years) using formal and informal assessment tools across all areas of development.  Prerequisite:  Successfully passed Praxis I.  Must have current copies of Act 34, Act 151, and FBI clearances on the first day of class.

   

ECED211     INTRODUCTION TO EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION (changed to ECED100 05/2006)

This sophomore level course addresses the historical, theoretical, and developmental foundations for young children, birth to eight years old.  While providing an orientation to early education of young children, emphases will be on programs, current issues, families, community, and cultural diversity.  Prerequisite:  Successful completion of freshman level professional PSYC102 Child Development and early childhood education required course work, and a declared major in Early Childhood Education.

 

 

ECED212     LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT IN EARLY CHILDHOOD

Provides a foundation of basic knowledge regarding language development in young children. Observation of and participation with young children are required. Prerequisite:  PSYC111 and ECED100 with a C or better or permission of instructor.  Must have current copies of Act 34, Act 151, and FBI clearances on the first day of class.

 

 

ECED220 __ EMERGING MATHEMATICS: CHILDREN FROM BIRTH THROUGH AGE 4

Designed to address the acquisition of knowledge and skills related to the development of mathematics concepts for preprimary children.  Prerequisite:  ECED100 with a C or better

   
ECED225 __ BEGINNING LITERACY

3 sh

Introduces appropriate methods for helping young children acquire literacy skills. The focus of this course is to provide students with information specific to children from PreK through grade 1. Students will learn to integrate literature with multiple curricular areas, how to assess young children's literacy, how to write appropriate lesson or activity plans, and what literature is appropriate for young children..  Prerequisite:  ECED100 with a C or better

   
ECED230 __ PROFESSIONAL COMMUNICATION AND FAMILY COLLABORATION

An introduction to the complex social, cultural and family factors that influence children's development and learning, the ethical guidelines that determine professional conduct and development, as well as, communication and guidance skills that promote positive relationships and successful learning experiences.

   

ECED325     ASSESSMENT AND EVALUATION IN EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION

Designed to address the acquisition of knowledge and skills related to the development, as well as the interpretation, of assessments used in Early Childhood classrooms.  Restrictions Upon Student Registration:  Must meet candidacy requirements.

   

ECED330     SOCIAL STUDIES FOR EARLY CHILDHOOD (course number changed to ECED436)

This component of the Early Childhood Education Professional Semester is designed to examine the content and methods of social studies education for young children in pre-primary and primary level (K-3) settings.  This course develops an understanding of the concepts and skills for effective instruction in all aspects of social studies for children aged birth through grade 3.  Students utilize cooperative learning techniques and they prepare lessons and unit plans for young children. Observation of and participation with young children are required.  Prerequisite:  Successful completion of all freshman and sophomore level professional and early childhood education required course work.

 

 

ECED331     PLANNING AND ADMINISTERING EARLY CHILDHOOD PROGRAMS:  FOSTERING PARTNERSHIPS WITH FAMILIES AND COMMUNITIES

Exams the principles of effective program design and administration appropriate for infants to kindergarten and Head Start children. Students develop an early childhood program based on child development theory, educational practice and governmental regulations.  In addition, selected aspects of program planning and administration are examined with an emphasis on fostering communication and collaboration with families and communities.  Prerequisite:  Successful completion of candidacy.  Others accepted by permission from the professor.

 

 

ECED332     DEVELOPING CREATIVE EXPRESSION

This junior level course is designed to examine the content and methods available to facilitate children’s expression through art, music and dramatic play within childcare, educational and academic settings.  Prerequisite:  Successful completion of all freshman, and sophomore level professional and early childhood education required course work or permission of the instructor. 

 

 

ECED340     CREATING HEALTHY ENVIRONMENTS FOR INFANTS AND TODDLERS (previously ECED435)

Designed to examine the content and methods of environments for infant and toddlers in caring, educational, academic and family/home and play settings.  Prerequisite:  Successful completion of freshman and sophomore level professional and early childhood, elementary, and/or special education required course work.

   

ECED421     HEALTH FOR EARLY CHILDHOOD

This component of the Early Childhood Education Professional Semester is designed to examine the diversity of teaching strategies available for guiding the learning experiences of young children in care giving, educational and academic settings.  Observation of and participation with children are required.  Prerequisite: Successful completion of all freshman, sophomore and junior level professional and early childhood education required course work. Students must maintain a minimum major and overall GPA of 2.5.

 

 

ECED428/429 __ STUDENT TEACHING AND PROFESSIONAL PRACTICUM 1 & 2:  EARLY CHILDHOOD (changed to ECED493/494 effective fall 2009)

Student teaching provides the capstone experience for pre-service teachers.  Two student teaching experiences are provided at two levels (appropriate to certification and grade level ranges).  Supervised practice in classrooms with certified teachers introduces the student to all aspects of the teaching day.  University professors supervise the student teachers and conduct weekly practicum sessions.  Restrictions:  To register, a student must meet Pennsylvania State Teacher Education Guidelines in overall average and average in major, no courses less than a “C” in professional courses and a successful clinical field experience.

   

ECED431     SCIENCE FOR YOUNG CHILDREN

This component of the Early Childhood Education Professional Semester is designed to examine the content and methods of science education for young children in care giving, educational and academic settings. Observation of and participation with young children are required.  Prerequisite:  Successful completion of all freshman, sophomore, and junior level professional and early childhood education required course work.

 

 

ECED432     LANGUAGE ARTS AND READING FOR EARLY CHILDHOOD

Designed to examine the content and methods of language arts and reading for young children in an academic setting.  Prerequisite: Successful completion of all Teacher Education requirements for entrance into the Professional Semester.

 

 

ECED433     MATH METHODS FOR GRADES K-4

Examines the content and methods of math education for young children in primary settings.  Prerequisite:  Successful completion of all Teacher Education requirements for entrance into the Professional Semester.

 

 

ECED434     GUIDANCE AND COMMUNICATION FROM EARLY CHILDHOOD

This component of the Early Childhood Education Professional Semester is designed to provide the historic origins of the Early Childhood Education guidance tradition, its foundation in a variety of theories of human development, learn applied guidance techniques and communication skills that promote successful learning experiences, and become familiar with observation and assessment tools that provide essential information for the effective guidance of young children.  Prerequisite:  Successful completion of all freshman, sophomore and junior level professional and early childhood education required course work, plus a 2.5 cumulative average and a 2.5 average in major course work. 

 

 

ECED435     INFANTS/TODDLERS, FAMILIES AND THE ENVIRONMENT (changed to ECED340)

This component of the Early Childhood Education Professional Semester is designed to examine the content and methods of environments for infant through school-aged children in caring, educational, academic and family/home and play settings.  Prerequisite:  Successful completion of freshman, sophomore, and junior level professional and Early Childhood Education required course work, and a cumulative GPA of 2.5 and 2.5 in major course work.

 

ECED436     SOCIAL STUDIES IN EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION (course number changed from ECED330)

Examines the content and methods of social studies education for young children in pre-primary and primary level (K-4) settings.  This course develops an understanding of the concepts and skills for effective instruction in all aspects of social studies for children through grade 4.  Prerequisite:  This course is part of the professional semester.  Successful completion of all freshman, sophomore, and junior level professional and early childhood education required course work and received candidacy.
