Communication Media
, B.A.

Students majoring in Communication Media gain professional training qualifying them for entry level positions in mass media industries.  They also obtain a strong educational background in the theoretical and critical literature necessary to pursue graduate study.

Majors can select one or more of the three concentrations: print journalism, broadcast media, or public relations and advertising, each supported by several practical skills courses. Students preparing for careers in print and broadcast media focus on reporting, editing, production design, and performance skills.  Students choosing advertising and public relations take courses in writing, media planning and design, campaign execution, and case study analysis.  In addition, all students explore relevant philosophical, economic, social and critical issues in theory courses, such as Communication Law and Ethics and Cultural Studies in Mass Communication.

Communication Media students further develop knowledge and skills through participation in campus media.  The campus newspaper has a modern computer production facility that includes a desktop graphics and text scanner, CD-ROM, digital photography, worldwide web interface, and the page-making program most widely used in commercial newspapers. The student-run television organization produces news, sports and other programs in the 2,300 square-foot color television studio. The radio club operates a free-format program schedule using a well-equipped studio to transmit web-based programming to listeners.

Another important feature of this major is that students can write for the campus public relations office and participate in off-campus, for-credit internships with commercial, non-profit, and governmental media organizations.
