In addition to the published H. H. Bennett
series on orange/yellow mounts, Metcalf also printed and mounted his
photographs on green card stock. They often bear numbering
(presumably in Metcalf's own hand) that corresponds to the published
Bennett sequence. In addition, there is sometimes an alternate
number -- the meaning of which has yet to be fully determined.
They are often but not always distinguished by the Metcalf
blindstamp.
Published Bennett
series views on green mounts:
Following are a number of examples of Metcalf's personal copies of
the Japan views. They typically bear the assigned Bennett
series number. Many also have an additional number which
presumably corresponds to Metcalf's own numbering system.
Careful comparison reveals that Metcalf and Bennett did not arrange
the images in the same way.
Care to Contribute?
A
complete understanding of Metcalf's green and orange mount images
has not been achieved. You may be able to help! If you
have any examples of Metcalf photography (Japan or otherwise), I
would appreciate your assistance. Everything from the mount to
numbering, titling, and framing of his images are of interest.
Front and back scans of the cards in higher resolutions would be
greatly appreciated even if you have a duplicate of a green mount
that you see on the site. It is also valuable getting a sense
of how many of these cards exist in public and private collections.
I will gladly acknowledge your contributions and incorporate the
research into this web site.
