The Lock Haven University Safe Zone's mission is to create a safe and welcoming environment for students who are gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, queer, or questioning and their allies by helping to develop allies on campus. This creates a support network for students who may face discrimination or conflict in society, particularly students who are gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, queer, or questioning and their allies.
The Lock Haven Safe Zone has seven primary objectives:
(1). Providing factual information and correcting misinformation on the topics of sexual and gender identity;
(2). Recognizing problems in the environment that affect GLBT individuals;
(3). Identifying policies and laws relevant to GLBT concerns;
(4). Identifying and discussing strategies to reduce hostility toward GLBT people;
(5). Acquiring skills and information for making appropriate referrals;
(6). Raising awareness of the negative impact of homophobia and heterosexism on all people;
(7). Defining terminology on the subject of sexual and gender identity.
This website is designed to be a resource to people interested in becoming part of Safe Zone, students who may have questions regarding gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, queer, or questioning issues, and their friends and families.
The Safe Zone program has two levels, based on a model of ally development. The model of ally development has four steps - awareness, knowledge, skills, and action. The first level of the Safe Zone program is based on the first two steps - awareness and knowledge. This level is called the LGBTQ Supporter. You can receive more information about the program by clicking on the "LGBTQ Supporter" link to the left. For a variety of reasons, some people may not be comfortable moving beyond these two levels. The second level of the Safe Zone program is based on the last two steps - skills and action. This level is called the Ally. You can receive more information about the program by clicking on the "Safe Zone Program" link to the left.
We are always looking for ways to improve this site. If you have any suggestions for links or information, please contact us.
