Lock Haven University
LGBTQ Supporter Program
The Safe Zone program's mission is to develop a safe and welcoming campus environment for LGBTQ students and their allies. This is accomplished through the development of faculty, staff, administrator, and student allies on campus. Allies tend to go through four steps - awareness, knowledge, skills, and action. During the awareness step, people become aware of the similiarities and differences between themselves and those who identify with the LGBTQ communities. This includes a growing awareness of the systemic discrimination against people who identity with the LGBTQ communities. As people become aware, they are ready to gain knowledge about sexual orientation, gender identity, and the experiences of people who identify as LGBTQ. As people gain knowledge, they are ready to develop the skills to share that knowledge and the willingness to take action.
The LGBTQ Supporter Program, as part of Safe Zone, is a program for those in the first two steps of ally development - awareness and knowledge. To become part of the LGBTQ Supporter Program, you should complete the online training program, which can be accessed from this page. The training program should take approximately one hour. Once you have completed the program, you can choose to receive a certificate and a logo to display. You may also then decide to apply for our Safe Zone Ally Program, which focuses on the development of the final two steps - skills and action.
