SCC Basic Excel Walkthrough

  1. Open Excel
  2. You will be greeted by a blank Cell Sheet
  3. Now Let’s Begin a Very Simple Project
  4. For the first Cell (A1) let’s give this project a title and let’s call it Cookies.
  5. Simply type in Cell A1 “Cookies”
  6. Obviously this looks pretty terrible, now let’s modify the title with bigger fonts and center it
  7. Let’s change the font to something bold and a little on the unusual side
  8. Now let’s center it over a few columns and give it a background color
    1. Highlight the area that you want to center it over
    2. Click Merge and Center
    3. Now Let’s give it some background color

                                                               i.      Simply click the paintbucket’s dropdown tab

                                                             ii.      Select a color

  1. Now let’s make some column fields
    1. In A2 let’s make a field called name (simply type name in column 2)
    2. For now until column H, let’s make some other field names (Ultimately the number depends on the nature of your project)
    3. Let’s center all of these column fields
    4. Let’s color these much like we colored the Header Title
    5. Now let’s make a border around these column fields
    6. Select the border you want from the drop down
    7. Time to start entering data!
    8. Select the column you wish to enter data in and start entering in the information you do know (note you can perform math functions and such and I will show you later how to do that)
    9. Notice how I left certain information out because I will duplicate it
    10. Simply select the information you wish to duplicate
    11. Drag down
    12. And it’s copied over
    13. Do the same for all duplicated information
    14. Let’s say now we want to know the total time it will take us to make all of the cookies

                                                               i.      Simply highlight the minutes we would bake these for plus one cell below it

                                                             ii.      Click Autosum

iii.      And you have a result

    1. How about we learn about basic formulas

                                                               i.      Instead of using autosum let’s learn the formula behind it

ii.      Select the cell underneath the information you wanted

iii.      Grab the formula by hitting the formula icon near the Formula bar

iv.      Select the desired formula from the list

                                                             v.      Select the range

vi.      And now you’ve learned basic functions!
