Principles of Biology II Spring 2011
Dr. Shonah A. Hunter
Optional Bonus Points for Lecture
There is an opportunity for you to earn bonus points for this class.
¨ For each unit material, you may submit a brief newspaper or magazine story or article (computer articles are ok too).
¨ The article must have been published within the past 2 years (no older).
¨ The article you choose must be at least 2 pages long and it cannot be just an abstract.
¨ It must be relevant to the material being discussed in class during that unit.
¨ It must be an application of the information that you are learning in class. This means that you cannot choose an article that describes information similar to your text book. It must be an article that takes the information you have learned in class and describes how it relates to “real life” situations or research questions. The article has to reflect new research or new findings, or new technologies related to the topic.
¨ YOU MAY NOT SUBMIT CLASS NOTES FROM SOMEONE’S WEB PAGE OR AN ENCYCLOPEIA TYPE ARTICLE (ASK IF YOU HAVE QUESTIONS ABOUT THIS).
¨ You will briefly summarize the article in your own words and state how it pertains to the unit material that is being covered in lecture. You must demonstrate an understanding of the article, in your own words, so choose something that you really do understand – longer and more complex is not necessarily better.
¨ It must be typed and double-spaced, and approximately 2-3 pages in length.
¨ At the top of the paper you must have your name, your lab section, the unit for which you are submitting the article, the correct source title and date, issue, etc. and a paragraph about how the article relates to the material in class.
¨ You must then attach a copy of the article to your summary page (it must be a copy to ensure that you have not destroyed materials from the library).
¨ Each article must be submitted by 5:00pm on the lecture period before the unit exam. No material will be accepted after that time. I WILL NOT ACCEPT EMAILED SUBMISSIONS FOR THIS ASSIGNMENT.
¨ Each submission will be worth a maximum of 5 points.
¨ You may turn in only 1 for each unit.
These are the points you should address regarding the article summary:
Describe the background information or nature of the problem addressed in the article.
Describe how the author(s) approached the problem.
Describe the results or conclusions of the problem and any future considerations.
Then, in a separate paragraph, you need to state clearly how this relates to lecture information. This
needs to show that you clearly understand the article and the relevance of it to this course.
