SCIENCE SEMINAR

GENERAL OVERVIEW

Each student will present a forty-five minute formal seminar that provides the audience with an overview of their topic. This oral presentation will stress the fundamental, underlying biological and scientific principles associated with the topic and will provide a basis for the informal discussion during the remainder of the class period. The informal discussion will be led by the student and will concentrate on specific issues associated with the formal presentation. The basic source of material that is presented in this informal discussion will come from the Internet.

Prior to their oral presentation, each student will publish, on the world wide web, a web page that summarizes information pertinent to their topic and that provides links to other relevant web sites. This web page also will serve as a final term paper for the course. All students in the class will be expected to visit and read the material provided on the web page prior to the seminar since each student is expected to actively participate in the seminar discussion. The student's grade will be determined from their seminar presentation, their web page, and their participation in seminar discussions.

The instructor will spend time at the beginning of the semester showing the students how to construct a simple web page and search the internet for information pertaining to their topic. These computer activities do not require prior experience with web page construction, indeed, these activities are geared toward those with little internet experience.

Individuals registering as a graduate student (BIOL 628) will be required to complete a substantial amount of additional work to fulfill requirements for graduate credit.

In an effort to save paper and other resources I have put most of the "handouts" that you will need for this course in this web site. Feel free to download whatever you want. If you want hard copy just use the print command in the tool bar.
