Biography
Dr. Hossain has an M.A. in
Sociology, M.A. Anthropology, and a Ph.D. in Sociology. He
teaches courses in Sociology, Anthropology, and Juvenile
delinquency. He has conducted research in Pennsylvania as
well as in Japan, the Philippines, Thailand, Malaysia, and
Bangladesh exploring issues on gender, race & ethnic
relations, religions, popular culture, consumer behavior,
and urban sprawl. His current research interests are in the
field of social and pedagogical implications of information
literacy and information communication technologies in
digital age. Dr. Hossain published 13 articles in journals
and select publications. His articles appeared in journals
such as Sociological Viewpoints, Social Science Journal,
Eastern Anthropologist, Lock Haven International Review,
Social Science Perspective, and Signs. He presented over 30
papers in various regional, national, and international
conferences.
Dr. Hossain has served as a
co-director of the US State Department Grant to foster small
business and leadership development in Sfax, Tunisia. The
project trained 16 Tunisian educators and entrepreneurs at
Lock Haven University for three months. The project was
completed in 2004.
Dr. Hossain received several
awards for his teaching, research, and service. The awards
include, the Teaching Learning Center Peers’ Choice Award
for Excellence in College Teaching (1998), the Lock Haven
Jaycees Community Service Award (1998), the Phi Delta Kappa
Outstanding Research Award (1998), the Rotarian of the Year
Award (1999), the Central Atlantic Student Government
Organization Outstanding Leader of LHU Campus Award (1999),
the Faculty Outstanding Scholarship Award (2000), the
Advisor of the Year Award (2001), the Faculty Outstanding
Service Award (2002), and the Students’ Choice Award (2005).
Dr. Hossain served or currently
serving in various leadership positions including Interim
Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs, Department
Chair, President of the Lock Haven Rotary Club, President of
the Pennsylvania Sociological Society, Vice-President, Phi
Beta Delta—Alpha Omega Chapter, Treasurer of the Clinton
County Women’s Center (Hilton Safe House), Chapter President
of APSCUF, Chair of the Lock Haven Area Shoe Bank,
Coordinator Clinton County Children and Youth Festival, and
Board member of the Clinton County Cooperative Extension.
Dr. Hossain was an invited guest
in various news programs throughout the Commonwealth. He
appeared in programs such as the State of Pennsylvania by
WVIA-TV, New Magazine with Patty Sattalia by WPBX-TV, Six
O’clock News of all three local affiliates.
