Team Etiquette

The importance of appearance:

The most important thing in addition to presenting your speech is the way you dress and the way you present yourself.  The forensics is usually very conservative about the dress code.  Suits, ties, skirts, sweaters, any kind of "dress-up" clothing are perfect for a competition.  Try to wear very professional shoes.  Anything that can make a lot of noise probably is not what you want to wear.  Women should avoid wearing clothes that are too tight or too revealing.  They should always wear pantyhose, make-up should look natural, and jewelry should be tasteful and minimal.  Tattoos and body piercing other than ears should be covered or removed.  You don't want something on your face or hands get all the attention while your speech is getting none.  Your main goal is to win the competition by giving the best speech.

Being prepared for each of your events:

You are expected to bring your own materials as well as materials that you borrow or receive from the forensic team to each speaking event. These items are not limited to, but may include the following:

Interpretation events: You should have your manuscript cut and mounted on black construction paper in a black binder approx. 5x8 and only 1 inch thick. The cover should be clear of all decorations and markings. You may sign out a practice timer if desired.

Limited prep events: Have white or yellow index cards, pens, legal pads (for organization only), and the extemp box chock full of cut and organized articles. Practice and preparation timer is recommended.

Debate: You should have your cases, your affirmative and negative files, legal pads, flow sheets, sticky notes, debate pen, forensic computer, and a timer.

Public address events: Be prepared with white or yellow index cards, your portfolio of visual aids. in addition to any equipment your speech requires including easels, TV/VCR console, pointer, etc. You may also have a practice timer.

The importance of being on time:

Always arrive a little early to all events and meetings. If there is a person giving a speech. NEVER enter the room while he/she is talking. Wait till the speech is done and then enter the room making as little noise as possible. Before each competition you will get a code number. As soon as you enter the room put your code number and your name on the board. If you have another event at the same time bracket, put DE (Double Event) after your name, so the judges know you have to leave early and. in some cases. they will let you go first so you can get ready for your next event. If the judge doesn't move you up in the order politely ask to be moved. After you're done speaking ask the judge if you may leave and exit the room very quietly. Go directly to your next event, erase the DE in front of your name and take a sit.

Things to remember:

  • Be on time and prepared.

  • Don't talk while another contestant is speaking or distract the speaker in any way.

  • Never enter or leave a room while someone else is speaking, listen attentively to other presentations.

  • Be polite to the judges and other contestants.

  • If you are double entered in a round, ask the judge if you may leave after your speech.
