May 3, 2000 -- MARK LUTHER NAMED HEAD FOOTBALL COACH (Lock
Haven, Pa.) - Mark F. Luther has been named the head
football coach of the Lock Haven University Bald Eagles, LHU President
Craig Dean Willis and LHU Director of Athletics Sharon E. Taylor announced
Wednesday. Luther is the eighth head coach to assume the reigns
since 1951, when the legendary Coach Hubert Jack led the LHU gridiron
squad. A native of Hawk Run,
Pa., this is Luther's first head coaching position.
He rejoined the Lock Haven football staff this April as an
assistant coach after a one-year hiatus when he worked as a computer
technical specialist with McKessonHBOC Technology Solutions.
Prior to that, he had assisted the Bald Eagles from 1994-98, acting
as defensive coordinator in the 1997 and ’98 seasons, recruiting
coordinator, and administrative assistant to former head coach Nick Polk.
Before arriving at LHU, Luther was an assistant coach
at Juniata College, working primarily with the running backs, and an
assistant at his alma mater, West Branch High School. A 1992 graduate of The Pennsylvania State University, Luther
earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Management Information Systems.
He was a member of the Nittany Lions football team for two seasons
(1990-’91), earning a spot on the roster as a walk-on.
"We are all excited to welcome Mark Luther back
into the Lock Haven family as our head coach," said President Willis.
"He impressed us with his knowledge of the University and his
commitment to success and excellence both on and off the field. Luther is
spoken very highly of by his peers as a coach, administrator, and as a
person. Along with his
knowledge of football, he has proven his ability as a recruiter of
high-quality student-athletes, and his energy and focus will be a positive
addition."
Despite the fact that the 1999 season was disappointing for
everyone involved in LHU football, Taylor remarked that the direction the
program has taken under former head coach Nick Polk, and the direction it
is anticipated to go under new head coach Mark Luther, is the right one.
"Mark Luther brings to this process dimensions and talents
that will allow us to build on that foundation and take it to the next
level," said Taylor. "He
and his assistant coaches are convinced they can get the job done, and we
are extremely pleased to have him here."
And Luther is excited to get started.
"I am truly looking forward to this opportunity," said
Luther. "It is fortunate
for me that I've had the opportunity to be here five years prior as an
assistant with the program, and I believe I have a good feel for the
University, and a good relationship with the coaches, players,
administration, and staff. Lock
Haven has great facilities, great coaches, and the athletics program
receives great support. I am
eager to get started building on what we have and on the job that Nick
Polk has started. I think we have a lot of positive things to work with, and I
am excited to have the chance to be a part of the program as it continues
to grow."
LHU former head coach Nick Polk (1996-99) resigned in March to
accept a position with the National Football League.
Interim head coach Terry Szucs will reassume his role as assistant
head coach and offensive coordinator at the University.

Haven, Pa.) -- Mark Luther, former Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania
assistant football coach (1994-98), will rejoin the Bald Eagle gridiron

football program, acting as defensive coordinator in the 1997 and ’98
seasons, recruiting coordinator, and administrative assistant to former
head coach Nick Polk.
He returns to The Haven after spending one year in private
business.
Prior to
his coming to LHU, Luther was an assistant coach at Juniata College and an
assistant at West Branch High School.
A 1992 graduate of The Pennsylvania State University, Luther earned
his Bachelor of Science Degree in Management Information Systems.
He was a member of the Nittany Lions football team for two seasons,
earning a spot on the roster as a walk-on.
"We are really pleased to have Mark back on campus," said
Taylor. "He
has so many talents and dimensions that will assist the program in many
different areas." "Were really excited about this years recruiting class, said Head Coach Nick Polk, who is entering his fourth season at LHU. "Most significantly, we accomplished what we wanted to in terms of addressing some needs. Going into the recruiting season, our staff really emphasized a desire to obtain some skill players with speed, and I feel we have met that goal with a great deal of success. It was also nice to land a local product like Nate Eck from Jersey Shore, who will pay long-term dividends for us." One of the most pressing needs for LHU was at the wide receiver position. Polk felt the coaching staff was particularly efficient in landing some top-notched talent at that position. "I was pleased with the fact that we were able to attract some quality wide receivers, with the most notable being Chris Banyas, a two-time all-state choice from Berwick High School, said Polk. "Joining him is Adam Angelici (Bethel Park High School), who will help us because he is such a big target, and Marcus Burkley (Woodland Hills High School), another talented player from the Pittsburgh area." Rounding out the list of LHUs top recruits is Buddy Teschner (Oakton High School), a first-team all-state and USA Today Honorable Mention All-America quarterback from Virginia. "We were extremely fortunate to get a talented player like Buddy Teschner to join our program," said Polk.
