Nov. 6, 2000 - LADY EAGLE SOCCER TO HOST NCAA TOURNAMENT FIRST ROUND (Lock Haven, Pa.) - The
Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania women's soccer team (16-1-3
overall) has earned the right to host a first-round game of the NCAA
Division II National Championships, finishing as the top squad in the
Northeast Region. The
Lady Eagles' opponent will be a familiar rival, Bloomsburg University
(15-3-1 overall), who has secured the second spot in the region.
A 16-team tournament, two teams from each of the eight NCAA
Division II regions received playoff berths.
Lock Haven will challenge Bloomsburg on Sunday, November 12, at
12:30 p.m. on LHU's McCollum Field.
The Lady Eagles, guided by second-year mentor Peter Campbell,
have compiled a program-record 16 wins, along with a historical best
87.5-winning percentage. Fresh off of capturing its second straight
Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference title, Lock Haven will make its
second appearance in the NCAA tournament, and also look to defend its
Northeast Region title. In
the midst of a standout season, the Lady Eagles had also sported one
of the nation's longest unbeaten streak at 17 games, which was broken
the last game of the regular season in a 0-1 overtime loss to Slippery
Rock University.
Lock Haven is paced by the offensive prowess of rookie
midfielder Naomi Clarke (Cambridge, New Zealand).
Clarke has posted nine goals and three assists this season to
lead The Haven with 21 points. Midfielder Rebecca Nichols (Wind Gap/Nazareth)
and forward Katie Taylor (Hammonton, N.J./Edgewood) are
scoring threats as well, as Nichols has netted six goals and five
assists, and Taylor has added four goals and six assists.
Sporting a well balanced offense, the Lady Eagles also have
five other players with 10 or more points, including Erin
McKasson (Irwin/Penn Trafford) (4g, 4a, 12 pts), Colleen
Donnelly (West Chester/Henderson) (5g, 1a, 11 pts), Kristi
Ward (Philadelphia/Nazareth Academy) (4g, 3a, 11 pts), Adria
Vitale (Philadelphia/St. Maria Goretti) (4g, 2a, 10 pts), and Amy
Dunn (Ephrata/Ephrata) (4g, 2a, 10 pts).
Defensively, senior keeper Takiyah Thomas (Milton/Milton)
has had a record-breaking season, posting a conference best GAA of
0.451 along with 106 saves. She has collected 11 shutout victories,
topping LHU's previous single season record of 10, set by Liz
Neidlinger in 1997. Opponents
have gotten only sparing looks at the goal, falling victim to a
tenacious defensive unit that has allowed only 131 shots and nine
goals all season long. The
Haven defense is comprised of senior Kerry Gross (Boiling
Springs/Cumberland Valley), and
sophomores Christa Cox (Ephrata/Ephrata), Erika
Schneider (Mechanicsburg/Cumberland Valley), and Shannon
Becker (Durham/Palisades), who also leads the squad with eight
assists.
For the Bloomsburg Huskies, this will be their third trek to
the national playoffs, reappearing on the tourney bracket after bids
in 1996 and 1998. Bloomsburg defeated Adelphi, 2-0, in the first round
in ’96 before falling to St. Joseph's (Ind.), 2-1, and then exited
after a 3-2 loss to C.W. Post in the opening round in ’98.
Senior midfielder Christine Krebs (South Hero, Vt./South
Burlington) leads the Huskies' offense and the PSAC with 41
points off of 18 goals and five assists.
Bloomsburg's all-time leading scorer with 57 goals, Krebs is
joined by Renee Williams (Larksville/Wyoming Valley West),
who has tallied 11 goals and 11 assists, and Rebecca Stametz
(Shamokin/Southern Columbia), who has contributed nine goals.
Bloomsburg defenders have allowed 21 goals this season, and
have combined for six shutouts. Senior
Amber Stout (Quakertown/Quakertown), sophomore Sara
Cornish (Syracuse, N.Y./Cicero), junior Sarah Branin
(Medford, N.J./Shawnee), and senior Danielle Brunetti
(Philadelphia/Nazareth Academy) all act as the last line of
defense in front of sophomore keeper Amanda Lawler
(Schnecksville/Parkland).
Lawler has a 1.04 GAA in 1216 minutes of play along with 82
total saves.
Bloomsburg and Lock Haven have met twice this season, with the
Lady Eagles taking both games, including last Saturday's 3-2
four-overtime battle for the PSAC crown.
The winner of Sunday's contest will advance to the
quarterfinals on November 18 or 19 (depending on the host institution)
versus the winner of the New England region's contest between Southern
Connecticut State University (19-1-0) and Franklin Pierce College
(16-2-2). ### |

Nov. 4, 2000 - LADY EAGLE SOCCER CAPTURES SECOND STRAIGHT PSAC CHAMPIONSHIP BLOOMSBURG—Lyndsay
Violi’s (Fairview/Fairview) goal with 6:49 to play in the fourth
overtime lifted the Lady Eagles of Lock Haven University to a 3-2 win
over Bloomsburg University in the Pennsylvania State Athletic
Conference (PSAC) women’s soccer championship game Saturday
afternoon.
It is the second straight and second overall PSAC post-season
title for Lock Haven, giving them a 16-1-3 overall record, while
Bloomsburg goes to 15-3-1.
Violi’s goal came after a corner kick by the Lady Eagles was
partially cleared by the Huskies. Violi, though, was able to keep the
ball just outside the box and then beat Bloomsburg goalie Amanda
Lawler (Schnecksville/Parkland) with a shot to the upper right
corner of the net.
Lock Haven dominated the play in the first half of a very
physical game. Numerous yellow cards were issued to both teams with
several players having to be helped from the field after taking some
hard hits. The Lady Eagles had the best chance to score in the first
half with 2:20 to play when Shannon Becker (Burham/Palisades) had a direct kick and her shot hit
the left post and bounced out.
Bloomsburg broke through the scoring drought in the second half
when Christine Krebs (South Burlington, VT/South Hero) scored on a
low-liner shot from about 40 yards out at the 47:17 mark. Krebs was
near the sideline when she let go the shot, which never really came up
off the ground and got by Bald Eagle goalie Takiyah
Thomas (Milton/Milton).
Lock Haven tied the score at 1-1 when Violi scored at the 65:06
mark off an assist from Carlene
Kratz (Wilkes-Barre/Bishop Hoban).
A few minutes later, Bloomsburg tried to break the tie, but
Thomas made a great diving stop of a shot by Renee
Williams (Larksville/Wyoming Valley West).
Bloomsburg did take the lead in the 80th minute when
the Huskies were awarded a penalty kick after the Lady Eagles were
called for a hand ball during a scramble in front of the net off a
corner kick. Williams took the shot and beat Thomas with a kick to the
right corner of the goal.
It looked as if the Huskies were going to win their second
title in the last three years before Becker gave the Lady Eagles new
life with a free shot that beat Lawler in the left corner of the net
with just 47 seconds left in the game. Becker took the shot after the
Huskies failed to clear the ball from the box on a restart.
In the first three overtimes, both teams had a few good scoring
opportunities, but were denied by the excellent play of the goalies.
For the most part, the play was centered in the middle of the field as
fatigue began to set in.
"We went deep on our bench, and used probably 22 or 23 of
our 24 dressed players," said LHU Head Coach Peter Campbell.
"We went down twice, and showed great effort and determination to
fight back both times -- with 50 seconds left, it's easy to say it's
over, but they never did."
"It was the type of game a championship should be, and
it’s a pity that there had to be a loser.
It was just a great moment.
The team came together and played for each other -- It was
unbelievable." ### |

game, and is paced by a pair of junior midfielders, Hilary
Gorzelnik (Boontown, N.J./Jefferson) and Blair Gantz
(Lancaster/Lampeter-Strasburg).
Gorzelnik leads The Rock with 16 points off of six goals and
four assists, and Gantz has posted six goals, including the game
winner in overtime against Lock Haven, and three assists for 15 total
points. Other offensive
threats include junior midfielder Susan Kelleher (Cork City,
Ireland/Lindsey Wilson) (5g, 4a) and freshman forward Cara
Yannotti (Pittsburgh/Plum) (3g, 6a).

total minutes. Other key players in the SRU defensive front include Maureen

ADAMS EARNS ALL-AMERICA HONORS Adams is Lady Eagle Soccer's First To Win National Recognition Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania women's soccer player Georgina Adams (Cardiff, Wales/Whitechurch) was selected a National Soccer Coaches Association of America/Adidas Division II First Team All-American, the first player in the Lady Eagles' six-year history to earn such an award. After the record-breaking season experienced by the Lady Eagles, and in particular Adams, it is fitting that the senior midfielder closes her standout career with the first All-America title ever conferred upon a Haven women's soccer player. Adams, a two-time First Team All-Northeast Region player and a four-time First Team All-PSAC student-athlete, led the Haven into its most successful season to date, helping take the squad to its first Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference championship, its first NCAA berth and first-round national tournament victory. She was also voted the PSAC Player of the Year by the league's coaches after notching 11 goals and nine assists to lead the Lady Eagle offense. For her career, Adams is second on all the Haven's offensive charts, recording 94 career points on 34 goals and 26 assists. The 1999 edition of the Lock Haven women's soccer team went 16-4, its best record in the program's history, bowing out of contention for the national title in the quarterfinals with a 3-1 loss to the eventual NCAA Division II national champions of Franklin Pierce (NH) College |
| December 1, 1999 -- Five LHU Women's Soccer Players Earn Regional All-America Honors Five Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania women's soccer student-athletes were awarded All-Northeast Region honors by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America/Adidas All-America Committee. Senior midfielder Georgina Adams (Cardiff, Wales/Whitechurch) and senior goalkeeper Jen Foster (Harrisburg/Central Dauphin) were named to the First Team along with rookie defender Rebecca Nichols (Wind Gap/Nazareth). Senior forward Rachel Clemens (Levittown/Neshaminy) and junior defender Kerry Gross (Boiling Springs/Cumberland Valley) both received Second Team accolades. The 1999 PSAC Women's Soccer Athlete of the Year, Adams has been one of The Haven's most formidable scoring threats all season, recording six game-winners among her 11 goals and nine assists. A four-time PSAC First Team Selection, Adams can be found near the top of all of The Haven's offensive charts -- among other records, she is second in career points (94), career goals (34), and career assists (26). Adams was also a first-team All-Northeast Region selection in 1998. Both Foster and Nichols receive the All-Northeast Region honors for the first time. Foster wrapped up the regular season as the leading keeper in the conference, and currently displays a 0.822 GAA with eight shutouts. She has allowed only 17 goals this season, and is The Haven's career leader in shutouts (25.5) and saves (294). Nichols played a large role in helping Foster accrue her eight shutouts this season, using her quickness and tenacity to turn away opponents' attacks. Nichols, the only freshman to appear on the All-Northeast Region team, was selected the Most Valuable Player of the PSAC Championship game last month for helping the Lady Eagles to their first conference title by containing West Chester's top scoring threat. A second-team selection, Gross was a key component in The Haven's staunch defensive front, who along with Nichols, limited opponents to just 0.822 goals per game. This is her second time on the All-Northeast Region team, having earned Second Team honors in 1998 as well. Clemens, Lock Haven's record holder for career goals (49), single season goals (17 in 1997), and career and single season points (117; 38 in 1997), makes her fourth appearance on the All-Northeast Region list. She was a First Team selection in 1996, 1997 and 1998. Clemens notched 10 goals and two assists this season, including The Haven's first goal in the PSAC championship game. Not only did the players receive recognition, but first year Head Coach Peter Campbell was also honored as Northeast Region Coach of the Year for the 1999 season. Campbell, who came to Lock Haven from Baldwin-Wallace College, led the Lady Eagles to one of their best seasons yet, carving out a 16-4 overall record (setting a school record for wins) and earning their first PSAC championship and berth to the NCAA Division II post-season tournament. Lock Haven advanced to the elite eight in the tournament before falling to Franklin Pierce College 3-1. |
| November 22, 1999 -- CAMPBELL
NAMED NSCAA/Adidas NE REGIONAL COACH OF THE YEAR Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania Women's Soccer Head Coach Peter Campbell was voted the 1999 NSCAA/Adidas Women's College Northeast Region Coach of the Year by his peers. First-year head coach Campbell guided the Lady Eagles all the way to the NCAA Division II Quarterfinals, where their season ended with a 1-3 loss to No. 1-ranked Franklin Pierce College (N.H.). Lock Haven wrapped up the record-making season with a 16-4 record, the most wins and the best winning percentage (.800) ever in the program's six year history. Campbell also directed the squad to a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference regular season title, as well as The Haven's first PSAC post-season tournament championship with a 2-1 win over West Chester University. A year of many firsts, the bid into the NCAA Division II National Tournament was the first-ever for the school, and the first-round win (0-0, advanced with a 3-1 advantage in penalty kicks) over C.W. Post-LIU marked the first win in NCAA post-season play for any Lady Eagles team. Campbell, the 1999 PSAC Coach of the Year, guided five players to All-PSAC recognition, including senior midfielder Georgina Adams, who earned Player of the Year honors for the conference as well. Campbell came to The Haven from Baldwin-Wallace College, where he had previously built a 21-14-3 record as the head coach of the men's soccer program for two seasons. A graduate of Gannon University, Campbell played four years for the Golden Knights, including two NCAA Division II Final Four appearances in 1989 and 1990. He also has extensive professional playing experience, having played in both Ireland and Canada. |

EAGLES HEAD NORTH FOR NCAA TOURNAMENT GAME After winning in dramatic fashion last Saturday against C.W. Post LIU with a 3-1 victory in a best-of-five shoot-out, the No. 11-ranked Lock Haven University womens soccer team earned the right to play No. 1-ranked Franklin Pierce College in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division II Tournament. The Lady Eagles will travel to Franklin Pierce College (Rindge, New Hampshire) this Saturday for a showdown at noon on the Ravens' Crystal Field. The Haven's first ever NCAA post-season game was an exciting, but exhausting thriller. After two 45-minute halves and four 15 minute sudden death overtime periods, the Lady Eagles and C.W. Post stood face to face, even up at 0-0. The only thing left was a shoot-out to determine the winner of this hard-fought defensive battle. C.W. Post made just one of its first three shots, with that one coming off the foot of Victoria Fleming after they were already down 2-0 compliments of two good kicks by the LHU leading scorer and Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Player of the Year Georgina Adams (Cardiff, Wales/Whitechurch) and teammate Kerry Gross (Boiling Springs/Cumberland Valley), a Second-Team All-PSAC player. LHU's Erin McKasson (Irwin/Penn Trafford) then stepped up and drove her shot into the upper right corner of the goal to give Lock Haven the win and a shot at revenge against the Franklin Pierce Ravens (17-1) who, back on September 4th, put the first dent in the Lady Eagles armor by handing them a 2-1 loss at home. The lone goal for the Haven was scored by Adams. It continues to be a record-breaking year for the Lady Eagles, who won their first-ever PSAC Championship, notched their first NCAA playoff bid and win, and now record a 16-3 won-loss mark, the best all-time at the University by number of wins and percentage (.842). Lock Haven has a tough battle ahead, facing Franklin Pierce, the No. 1 team in the nation. The Ravens advanced past the first round of the national tournament by taming the 10th ranked Merrimack College Warriors 3-1 at home this past Saturday. Leading the charge for Franklin Pierce was Minna Mustonen (Helsinki, Finland), the New England Collegiate Conference Player of the Year, who scored two of the Ravens' goals off of assists from Angela Verdoes (Katwijk Aan Zee, Holland). Mustonen leads the NCAA in scoring with 31 goals and 13 assists for 75 points, and is also found at the top of the goals per game charts with an average 1.72 scores each contest. Verdoes is third in the nation in scoring (20 goals and 22 assists for 62 points), and also leads the nation in assists per game (1.22). The other score was posted by Jenny Petronis (Burnt Hills, N.Y.). |
| November 13, 1999 -- LADY
EAGLES ADVANCE IN NCAA DIVISION II TOURNAMENT Lock Haven University's women's soccer team advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division II Tournament after defeating C.W. Post-LIU 3-1 in a penalty kick shootout Saturday at McCollum Field. The marathon game kept the crowd over 400 on their feet throughout regulation and into four sudden-death overtime stanzas. In the ensuing shootout on penalty kicks, the No. 11-ranked Lady Eagles were able to dispose of the No. 6-ranked Pioneers when sophomore Erin McKasson (Irwin/Penn Trafford) put the ball past goalkeeper Paige Pepper. C.W. Post's Julia Milone missed the opening penalty kick while LHU's Georgina Adams (Cardiff, Wales/Whitechurch) made good to put the Lady Eagles up 1-0. Both teams missed on their next attempts, but LHU went up 2-0 when Kerry Gross (Boiling Springs/Cumberland Valley) put her shot in the net. The Pioneer's Victoria Fleming kept their hopes alive by putting a shot past LHU goalkeeper Jen Foster (Harrisburg/Central Dauphin), but McKasson's shot to the upper right side of the net was just out of Pepper's reach, sealing LHU's victory in the school's first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance. Both teams had their opportunities to score, but excellent defense on both sides of the field made the difference in the game. The two squads were evenly matched, with C.W. Post edging Lock Haven 17-16 in shots on goal and the Lady Eagles gaining the advantage in corner kicks by a 10-4 margin. The keepers for each school recorded eight saves in the 150 minutes of action. LHU will play Franklin Pierce College, the No. 1 ranked team in Division II, in the next round of the tournament at a site and time to be announced by Monday morning. The Ravens defeated No. 10-ranked Merrimack College by a score of 3-1 C.W. Post finishes the 1999 season with a 16-3-1 record while LHU improves to 16-3 on the year. |

Nichols played a large role in helping Foster accrue her eight shutouts this season, using her quickness and tenacity to turn away opponents' attacks. Nichols, the only freshman to earn First Team honors, was selected the Most Valuable Player of the PSAC Championship game last Sunday for helping the Lady Eagles to their first conference title by containing West Chester's top scoring threat. Two players earned Second Team All-PSAC honors -- defender Kerry Gross (Boiling Springs/Cumberland Valley) and forward Rachel Clemens (Levittown/Neshaminy). Gross was a key component in The Haven's staunch defensive front, who along with Nichols, limited opponents to just 0.778 goals per game. This is her second time on the All-PSAC team, having earned First Team honors in 1997. Clemens, Lock Haven's record holder for career goals (49), single season goals (17 in 1997), and career and single season points (117; 38 in 1997), makes her fourth appearance on the All-Conference list. Clemens notched 10 goals and two assists this season, including The Haven's first goal in the PSAC championship game last weekend. Not only did the players receive recognition, but first year Head Coach Peter Campbell was voted by his peers as the Coach of the Year for the 1999 season. Campbell, who came to Lock Haven from Baldwin-Wallace College, led the Lady Eagles to one of their best seasons yet, carving out a 15-3 record (tying a school record for wins) and earning their first PSAC championship and berth to the NCAA Division II post-season tournament. The Lady Eagle soccer team, 15- overall and ranked No. 11 in the final NSCAA/adidas poll, hosts C.W. Post/LIU, 16-2-1 overall and No. 6 in the nation, in a first round game of the NCAA Division II National Championships on Saturday, November 12, on McCollum Field at 1 p.m. |

WOMEN'S SOCCER GETS FIRST-EVER BID TO NCAA TOURNAMENT -- Will Host First Round Playoffs Against C.W. PostThere's a first time for everything, and the 1999 Lock Haven University women's soccer season certainly seems to be living up to the old cliché. The Lady Eagles, under the guidance of first-year head coach Peter Campbell, won their first-ever Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Championship, and now, for the first time in school history, will have the chance to play for a national title. In the tournament brackets released today, The Haven earned the top spot in the Northeast Region, and will host a first-round game against the second-ranked team in the region, C.W. Post, on Saturday, November 13, at 1 p.m. A 16 team tournament, two teams from each of the eight NCAA Division II regions received championship berths. The Lady Eagles' current wave of success has them on a nine-game winning streak with their last loss coming at home against Mercyhurst College, who has also qualified for the national tournament in the Great Lakes region. The Haven wraps up conference competition with the stingiest defense in the league, allowing just 0.78 scores a contest while putting up 2.39 goals per contest of its own. Along with a talented defensive backfield, including PSAC Championship MVP Rebecca Nichols (Wind Gap/Nazareth), the Lady Eagles boast one of the top goalkeepers in the region in senior Jen Foster (Harrisburg/Central Dauphin). Foster has recorded a 0.78 GAA, while posting 70 saves on her way to eight shutouts. Leading scorer for The Haven is senior Georgina Adams (Cardiff, Wales/Whitechurch), who has 11 goals and nine assists for the year. Rachel Clemens (Levittown/Neshaminy), Adria Vitale (Philadelphia/St. Maria Goretti), and Katie Taylor (Hammonton, N.J./Edgewood) are also scoring threats, notching 22 (10g, 2a), 17 (7g, 3a), and 16 (7g, 2a) points, respectively. The winner of Saturday's game will advance to the quarterfinals on November 20 or 21, (depending on the host institution), against the winner of the New England region's first round contest between Franklin Pierce College and Merrimack College. For pairings, see following page. More information about the 1999 NCAA Division II Women's College Cup can be found online at http://www.ncaasoccer.net |

WOMEN'S SOCCER CLAIMS FIRST PSAC CHAMPIONSHIP CROWN The Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania womens soccer team defeated West Chester University of Pennsylvania for the 1999 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Championships by the final margin of 2-1. The third time was the charm for The Haven, who wins its first conference crown after finishing as the runner-up in its previous two appearances in the title game (1997, 1996). The Lady Eagles jumped out in the lead early. Just over a minute had ticked off the clock when senior forward Rachel Clemens (Levittown/Neshaminy) picked up a loose ball off a thwarted attempt by Katie Taylor (Hammonton, N.J./Edgewood) inside the box, lifting it high overtop WCU keeper Stacie Bencivengos (Yardville, N.J./The Peddie School) head and into the goal. At 25:41 The Haven struck again, as Erin McKasson (Irwin/Penn Trafford) was able to break away down the right side of the field. Senior midfielder Georgina Adams (Cardiff, Wales/Whitechurch) threaded the defense to get McKasson the ball. McKasson drew the keeper out, and with the defenders on her back, sent a hard kick just past the keepers reach to the back of the net for the score and the 2-0 lead. West Chester got some good looks at the goal in the first half, but sent three of the six shots over the crossbar. Into the second half, both defenses were in high gear, as neither team was able to get a shot off in the first 15 minutes. The Havens Rachel Clemens took the first attempt of the half, sprinting down the field on a breakaway opportunity only to have the ball just miss, clanking off the post. With a little under 20 minutes remaining, the West Chester Golden Rams started building a comeback, as Lisa Maurer (Lancaster/Hempfield) headed the ball into the goal amidst a crowd directly in front of the net off a corner by Megan Ulrich (Norfold, Va./Osbourn Park). From that point, the Golden Rams attack was hatched. West Chester picked up five more shots on goal before the final horn, but the standout performance of Haven keeper Jen Foster (Harrisburg/Central Dauphin) played a large role in preventing West Chester from scoring again by picking up seven saves, four of those in the second half. West Chester falls to 15-5 overall. This was the Golden Rams first ever appearance in the PSAC Championship game. Lock Haven is now 15-3, and ties the school record for wins (last set in 1996 when the team went 15-5). The Lady Eagles .833 win percentage is the best in the six-year history of the program. Championship MVP: Rebecca Nichols (Wind Gap/Nazareth) freshman LHU defender who had the task of keeping WCUs leading scorer Heather Allgyer in check... played the entire game |

EAGLE SOCCER TO HOST PSAC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME VERSUS WEST CHESTER The Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania nationally ranked (13th) women's soccer team (14-3, 9-1 PSAC) will host the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Championships this Sunday, November 7, at 1 p.m. on the Lock Haven campus at McCollum Field. Earning the No. 1 seed after finishing the season with a 9-1 conference record, Lock Haven will face off against No. 2 seed West Chester University (15-4, 8-2 PSAC), who defeated Bloomsburg University, 2-0, in the semifinal contest on Wednesday. The Lady Eagles, under the direction of first-year Head Coach Peter Campbell, finished the regular season with a 14-3 overall record and a 9-1 mark in the PSAC. The Haven is ranked 13th in the nation, and is second in the Northeast Region. The championship game gives Lock Haven the opportunity to avenge its only conference loss, which came against the Golden Rams of West Chester in what was both squads' first PSAC match-up of the season. Sporting the best winning percentage (.824) and second-best win total in the program's six-year history (1996 team finished 15-5) at 14-3 overall, the Lady Eagles will be in search of their first conference title in their fourth consecutive appearance in the post-season playoffs. Lock Haven has been led by finesse player Georgina Adams (Cardiff, Wales/Whitechurch). A senior midfielder, Adams is sixth in the PSAC with 1.76 points per game from 11 goals and eight assists. Senior forward Rachel Clemens (Levittown/Neshaminy), the Lady Eagle leader in career goals and points (now with 48 goals and 115 points), has nine goals and two assists for 20 points. The Haven also has a scoring threat in the freshman tandem of Adria Vitale (Philadelphia/St. Maria Goretti) and Katie Taylor (Hammonton, N.J./Edgewood). Vitale posts seven goals and three assists, and Taylor has chipped in with seven goals and two assists. The PSAC-leading Haven defense allows just 0.77 goals per game, and is backed by the play of senior goalkeeper Jen Foster (Harrisburg/Central Dauphin). Foster has recorded a conference-leading 0.764 GAA by allowing just 13 goals all season, and tallies eight shutouts, and 63 saves in 1532 minutes in goal. West Chester University, under the guidance of interim head coach Drew Hoffman, has constructed a 15-4 overall record as well as an 8-2 mark in PSAC action. The Golden Rams' 2-0 win over Bloomsburg in the semifinal ushered in their first playoff win in the eight-year history of the program. The 15 wins also ties the school record for victories in a season (set in 1998). The West Chester offense is headlined by the prolific scoring threat of senior forward Heather Allgyer (New Holland/Lancaster Mennonite). Allgyer is second in the conference with 2.50 points per game off of 19 goals and seven assists. Junior midfielder Christina Almquist (Tannersville/Pocono Mountain) has tallied 10 goals and six assists, and junior midfielder Val Bowman (Lancaster/Manheim) has seven goals and three assists, including a score in the semifinal game versus Bloom. The Golden Ram defense is shored up by junior keeper Stacie Bencivengo (Yardville, N.J./The Peddie School). Bencivengo is second in the conference to The Haven's Foster in GAA with a 0.780, and has allowed just 15 goals in 1737 minutes played along with 10 shutouts and 97 saves. |

ANNOUNCES CAMPBELL AS NEW HEAD WOMENS SOCCER COACHThe Lock Haven University
of Pennsylvania Department of Athletics has announced that Peter Campbell will join
the Bald Eagle staff as the Head Womens Soccer Coach.
Campbell takes over the reigns of the womens soccer program following the resignation of former LHU head coach Liz Driscoll, who has taken the head position at Wellesley College. Campbell joins the LHU community after a successful two-year stint at Baldwin-Wallace College as the head mens soccer coach. There he built a 21-14-3 record, including a 12-7-1 ledger in 1998, which set a school record for wins in a season. Prior to 1997, he had served as the assistant with the Baldwin-Wallace womens squad for four years. Releases Coaching Position Changes Lock Haven University has announced that Head
Mens Basketball Coach Brad Bross and Head Womens Soccer Coach
Liz Driscoll will be leaving their posts in order to accept positions at other
schools. In addition, Head Womens Softball Coach Kim Lindsey has
taken another position within the department and will not return to coach the Lady Eagles
next season.
Bross has accepted a position as assistant athletic director for development at Coastal Carolina University, an NCAA Division I institution located in Conway, S.C. Bross has been with LHU for the last 11 years, eight as an assistant and the last three as head coach of the Bald Eagles. During that time he has amassed a 16-62 record, including a 6-20 mark this past season. " I congratulate Brad on getting an opportunity to pursue a long-term goal of his," says LHU Director of Athletics Sharon E. Taylor. "He has been one of the most dedicated and hardworking members of our staff for all of his time here and Im glad to, publicly acknowledge his efforts. Coastal Carolina is fortunate to have attracted him to their program."Bross will be joining former mens basketball coach Dave Blank, who was recently named as Coastal Carolinas new athletic director. Driscoll leaves LHU in order to take over the reins of the womens soccer program at Wellesley (MA) College, where she briefly served as an assistant coach from 1995-96. An LHU graduate assistant coach in 1997, Driscoll took over as head coach of the Lady Eagles when the position became vacant in early 1998. In her one year at the helm, LHUs womens soccer team compiled an 11-7-2 overall record and a 7-1-2 mark in conference play. She guided the team to the PSAC playoffs where they were defeated in the semi-finals after two overtime sessions. Six of Driscolls players earned All-PSAC honors. "Its difficult to lose a coach when we want to keep her and when she wants to stay," says Taylor of Driscoll. "But, being on a faculty appointment at Wellesley will enable her to contribute her talents to their soccer program and teach at the same time. We wish her well." Lindsey has been associated with LHU softball for over 15 years, having been the captain of the Lady Eagle squad that finished as the NCAA Division II Runners-Up in 1988. The recipient of the Charlotte E. Smith Award that year as the Outstanding Female Athlete at The Haven, Lindsey remained at LHU in 1989 as an assistant coach. In 1990 Lindsey became the head coach, and since that time has guided the Lady Eagles to a 152-167 mark. In her nine years as head coach, LHU has recorded two 20-win seasons, numerous playoff appearances and a multitude of All-PSAC selections. This past season the team was 14-22 overall, including a 7-13 record in PSAC action. Lindsey will remain involved in athletics at LHU as she takes on other duties within the department."Kim has contributed to Lock Haven University in many ways as a student-athlete and as a staff member," says Taylor. "Her decision to leave coaching was not an easy one, but I look forward to working with her in her new role." |
