Nov. 10, 2000 -  LHU SPIKERS ADVANCE TO PSAC
CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH

(Edinboro, Pa.) - The Lock Haven Lady Eagles advance to the PSAC post-season tournament title game for the fifth consecutive season after defeating East Stroudsburg University, 3-0, in semifinal action tonight.  Lock Haven, the second seeded squad in the PSAC Western Division, will meet up with the winner of the Edinboro University (No. 1 West) - Shippensburg University (No. 2 East) match-up scheduled for later this evening.

The Lady Eagles easily handled the Warriors in game one, taking the first point of the game with a kill by junior outside hitter Lauren Nuzum (Manchester/Northeastern) and proceeding in much the same manner for the entire game.  The Haven would record an early 10-2 lead before closing out the game at 15-7.

Game two would prove a little more difficult, with four lead changes before LHU pulled out the 15-12 victory riding on tough play at the net by junior outside hitter Kelli Crouch (Lancaster/Conestoga Valley) and senior middle hitter Stefanie LaFata (Reading/Holy Name).  Lock Haven opened up the game with a 2-0 advantage, but East Stroudsburg went on a 4-0 run to jump ahead, 4-2.  ESU built a 6-3 lead before The Haven went on a six-point run to recapture the lead.  Two more ties and a final lead change later, LHU was sitting on an 11-10 advantage after a solo block by LaFata.  A kill by Crouch, a block by LaFata and Crouch, and then a kill by Crouch on an East Stroudsburg overpass brought Lock Haven to game point.  Two Haven hitting errors brought ESU two points closer, but LaFata wrapped things up with a kill through the middle to take the second game, 15-12.

The Lady Eagles came out firing in the third game, rolling to a 10-1 lead before ESU attempted a comeback.  After five unanswered points from the Warriors and a Lock Haven timeout, the Lady Eagles responded to close out the game and the match on a five-point run capped off by a kill from middle hitter Kathryn Stallings (Mechanicsburg/Mechanicsburg), whose steady play resulted in a game-high 19 kills along with seven blocks.

For the game, Stallings led the Lady Eagles with 19 kills, seven blocks, and seven digs.  Stefanie LaFata posted 12 kills, 10 digs, and five blocks, while Kelli Crouch added 10 kills and eight digs.  Junior setter Shana Fessette (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Beekmantown Central) posted 43 assists on the evening, and also recorded 10 digs in the victory.

“We played well when we needed to play well,” said Head Coach Tom Justice.  “We served tough and passed well.  We lost a little focus in game two, but by and large I was pleased with the effort.  The one thing I am concerned about is our focus — we have to make sure we keep our mission in mind at all times.  We haven’t responded quickly enough when we have been challenged, but I have enough confidence that we can put it all together, so I am excited to see what happens tomorrow."

The Lady Eagles (23-9, 9-1 PSAC West) and the Fighting Scots of Edinboro (19-6, 9-1 PSAC West) finished the regular season as co-champions of the PSAC West, but Edinboro wins the tie-breaker and earns the No. 1 seed in the West along with the opportunity to host this year’s PSAC post-season tournament.

Historically Speaking…

The Lady Eagles, the defending conference champions, make their sixth consecutive PSAC post-season appearance and will be playing for their third PSAC title after capturing the crown in the 1999 and 1996 seasons. Edinboro leads the PSAC in post-season championship titles with eight, including four in the 1990’s with the most recent coming in 1998. The Fighting Scots have qualified for the event 20 times, including the past 15 years. Lock Haven and Edinboro have butted heads in the last four championship matches, with each pocketing a pair of titles.

East Stroudsburg makes its 15th appearance in the post-season and is first since 1997, having collected the championship on four occasions (1969, ‘85, ‘86, ‘87). This season marks the first time since 1994 that Shippensburg has earned a PSAC bid, and despite advancing to the tournament every year from 1981 to 1994, the Raiders will still be playing for their first conference title.

The Lady Eagles...

Led by 10th-year mentor Tom Justice (Southern Illinois University, ‘71), the Lady Eagle volleyball program has established itself as one of the premier teams in the conference and region, and has been ranked first in the NCAA Division II Atlantic Region all season long. The Haven program, along with Justice, celebrated its 10th anniversary by reaching the 200-win plateau, and now owns a 205-143 overall record. Currently sporting a 23-9 overall ledger, this season’s Lady Eagles reached the 20-wins mark for the sixth consecutive season.

Stellar Senior Middle Duo...

LHU's middle hitter duo of Kathryn Stallings (Mechanicsburg/Mechanicsburg) and Stefanie LaFata (Reading/Holy Name) has led the Lady Eagles in hitting and blocking this season. Stallings has posted 339 kills with a .330 attack percentage, and leads the PSAC with 136 total blocks (40 solo). LaFata has stepped up her play on both sides of the ball, recording 312 kills and a .336 attack percentage, 51 service aces, 231 digs, and 92 total blocks.

Both players have continued their assault on the Lady Eagle record books. Stallings, the PSAC blocking leader, is also The Haven's career leader in blocks with 608 and is third on the all-time kill list with 1245. LaFata is second on LHU's career kills list with 1280 and third on the all-time service aces (218) and blocking (373) lists.

Outside Hitting Lineup...

The Haven features a versatile outside hitting lineup, led by rookie Kara Warnke (Aurora, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit). Warnke has posted 252 kills on the season, along with 35 service aces. Additionally, Warnke is only the fourth player in Haven history to record over 300 digs in a season, currently posting a team-high 312 digs.

The Haven also utilizes the talents of juniors Lauren Nuzum (Manchester/Northeastern) and Kelli Crouch (Lancaster/Conestoga Valley). Nuzum has contributed 214 kills, 92 digs, and 29 blocks this season. Crouch earned a starting role in the beginning of the season, taking over setting duties early but resuming an outside hitter role for the latter half of the year. A true utility player, she has posted respectable numbers all the way around the court with 124 kills, a team-high 55 service aces, 254 digs, and 30 total blocks.

Seniors Jillian Klinzing (Pittsburgh/South Park) and Angie Daugherty (Wrightsville/Eastern York) are The Haven’s opposite side hitters. Klinzing has 109 kills and 51 blocks, and Daugherty has added 134 successful attacks with 39 total blocks.

December 6, 1999 -- THREE LHU VOLLEYBALL PLAYERS EARN
                             ALL-REGION HONORS
; Justice Named Coach of the Year

(Lock Haven, Pa.) ~ Three Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania women's volleyball players were selected to the 1999 American Volleyball Coaches Association Division II All-Atlantic Region team. Senior Sarah Schall (Shippensburg/Shippensburg) and juniors Stefanie LaFata (Reading/Holy Name) and Kathryn Stallings (Mechanicsburg/Mechanicsburg) all earned the regional honors. Ninth-year Head Coach Tom Justice was also among those being awarded, as he received Coach of the Year honors for the Atlantic Region.

Sarah Schall, a senior outside hitter, received her fourth All-Region accolade. Schall's career list of post-season awards is extensive, with three Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference West Player of the Year awards (1997, ’98, ’99) along with a Rookie of the Year honor in 1996, four First Team All-PSAC West certificates, the 1999 PSAC post-season tournament MVP, and three PSAC Scholar-Athlete awards.

She is the school leader in career kills (1,900) and digs (1,563) after registering a team-best 440 kills and 363 digs this season, including a 20 kill and 21dig effort in the NCAA Division II Elite Eight against West Texas A&M University.

Junior middle hitter Stefanie LaFata earned her first All-Region award. LaFata is a two-time First-Team All-PSAC player. She led this season's Lady Eagles in hitting percentage, connecting for 416 kills out of 885 total attempts for 35.1-percent. LaFata led the squad in service aces with 68, and was second on the team in total blocks with 114 (15 solo).

The awards also mark the first All-Region accolade for junior middle Kathryn Stallings. Stallings earned her first appearance on the All-PSAC squad this season, receiving Second Team honors. She was among conference leaders in blocking, leading Lock Haven with 160 total blocks, including 43 solo stops. For the season, Stallings registered 406 kills, hitting at an impressive .350 clip.

Head Coach Tom Justice was also among those receiving honors, being selected the NCAA Division II Atlantic Region Coach of the Year. His second regional recognition (the first was in 1997, after the Lady Eagles' first trip to the Elite Eight), Justice led the 1999 Lady Eagles to their best season yet, recording a 32-6 record. The squad advanced to the Elite Eight, where they bowed out with a 1-3 loss to West Texas A&M University. Quite possibly a sign of even better things to come, his team's one game victory was the first time in the history of the Elite Eight (since 1988) that a team from the Atlantic Region had won a game. Along the way, his squad earned a regular-season PSAC West title with a flawless 10-0 conference record, a PSAC Post-Season Championship, and an Atlantic Region Championship. Justice was also the PSAC West Coach of the Year, his third such honor and second straight (1996, 1998).

December 2, 1999 -- Volleyball Team Loses In Elite Eight Tournament

(Lock Haven, Pa.) ~ The Lock Haven University women's volleyball team saw their season come to an end Thursday afternoon, falling to second-ranked West-Texas A&M University three games to one, in the elite eight tournament in Battle Creek, Michigan.

The Lady Eagles won the first game 15-10, but dropped three consecutive games( 8-15, 9-15,  11-15), to end their season with a record of 32-6.

"In the second and third game oneof the reasons we fell behind is because we played too conservitavely, and our passing game kind of fell off as well," said LHU head coach Tom Justice. Justice said the Lady Eagles played well and he never lost confidence in their ability.

Sarah Schall led the Haven with 20 kills in the match. "We knew it was our last time to compete together as this team. We had fun and that was one of the things we wanted to do," she said.

November 17, 1999 -- HAVEN VOLLEYBALL EARNS POST-SEASON PSAC HONORS
Schall Garners Third-Straight Player of the Year Award,
Coach Justice Named Coach of the Year For Second Year In A Row

Several members of the Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania volleyball team were among the top players in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference honored as First and Second Team All-PSAC selections, as released today. Senior outside hitter Sarah Schall (Shippensburg/Shippensburg) garnered her third-straight PSAC Western Division Player of the Year award after leading The Haven to a PSAC regular season and post-season championship. Head Coach Tom Justice was rewarded for his hard work and dedication to building a strong volleyball program by being named the Western Division Coach of the Year. He had received similar honors last season. Three other individual players were recognized as well by being voted to the First or Second Team All-PSAC squads, including Shana Fessette (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Beekmantown Central), Stefanie LaFata (Reading/Holy Name), and Kathryn Stallings (Mechanicsburg/Mechanicsburg). Schall was also named to the first-team all-conference.

Schall picks up her third consecutive Player of the Year honor, as well as her fourth First Team All-PSAC certificate. Among the numerous accolades she has received, Schall was the 1999 PSAC Championship MVP. She currently leads the team in kills (399) and digs (319), and is also the all-time school record holder in both categories with 1,859 career kills and 1,519 career digs. A three-time All-Atlantic Region player, Schall has her goals focused on a fourth, as well as a coveted All-American title.

Sophomore setter Shana Fessette makes her second appearance on the all-conference list and her first as a member of the First Team. Fessette's phenomenal athleticism and quiet leadership has become a tremendous asset to the Haven squad. She is currently averaging 11.54 assists per game, and has also contributed with 159 digs and 47 service aces.

Junior middle Stefanie LaFata earns her second First Team All-PSAC award, having received like recognition last season. LaFata leads the team in attack percentage, hitting the ball at a .369 clip with 380 kills. She has registered 104 blocks, and leads the team in service aces with 62.

Kathryn Stallings, also a junior middle, picks up Second Team All-PSAC honors in her inaugural appearance on the all-conference squad. Stallings has been a force to be reckoned with at the net for the Lady Eagles, stopping 149 opponent attacks with the block. She has tallied 371 kills and has an impressive .354 hitting percentage.

For Coach Tom Justice, this Coach of the Year award marks an incredible third time in four seasons that the league coaches have selected him for the honor. Justice has led his 1999 squad to a 30-5 overall record, a PSAC regular-season title with a perfect 10-0 conference record, a PSAC post-season Championship, and now to a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Division II Atlantic Region. He has been The Haven's volleyball coach since the program's inception in 1991, taking the team from a 0-17 start that season, all the way to the national level of competition for which Lock Haven has become associated with in recent years. Justice's career record stands at 180-133 overall.

By virtue of their No. 1 seed, the Lady Eagles will host the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional Championships this weekend, Saturday and Sunday, November 20-21. The other three competitors in the four-team championship include #2 Edinboro University of Pennsylvania, #3 Lees-McRae (N.C.) College, and #4 University of Charleston (W.Va.). Semifinal matches begin on Saturday at 5 p.m., when Lock Haven will face the University of Charleston. Edinboro will match up against Lees-McRae at 7:30 p.m. The winner advances to the region championship match on Sunday at 3 p.m. That winner earns a berth into the Elite Eight in Battle Creek, Mich., to be held from Thursday, Dec. 2 through Saturday, Dec. 4.

November 15, 1999 -- LHU VOLLEYBALL TO HOST NCAA REGIONAL
                              CHAMPIONSHIPS --
Competitive Field Set To Vie For Regional Crown

Just one day after capturing the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference post-season tournament crown, the Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania women's volleyball team was awarded the No. 1 seed and the opportunity to host the 1999 National Collegiate Athletic Association Atlantic Regional Championships this Saturday and Sunday, November 20 and 21, in Thomas Field House. The other three teams vying for the right to advance to the Elite Eight at Kellogg Arena in Battle Creek, Michigan, are second seed Edinboro University of Pennsylvania, Lee's McRae (N.C.) College will be the No. 3 seed, and No. 4 seed University of Charleston (W.Va.).

Below is a quick capsule of information for each involved team:

LOCK HAVEN: The Haven is fresh off of its victory over Edinboro University in the PSAC Championship on Saturday, its second conference title in four years. The Lady Eagles clawed their way back from a two-game deficit (15-17, 13-15) to win the next two games (15-4, 15-6) and force a fifth, rally-scoring game for the crown. With a 1-2 record in matches forced into a fifth game this season, LHU rode the wave of momentum and pounded out a 15-10 win to earn the championship title. Now with a 30-5 overall record, the Lady Eagles have produced the best winning percentage of any Haven squad at .857, and need two more wins to record the most victories in a season by an LHU team (31-16 in 1997).

Led by PSAC championship Most Outstanding Player Sarah Schall (Shippensburg/Shippensburg), the Lady Eagles are hitting at a .280 clip. Schall added 22 kills and 26 digs in the marathon match over Edinboro, and for the season has registered a team-high 399 kills and a .252 attack percentage. She is also the forerunner in defense behind the block with 319 digs. At the net, juniors Stefanie LaFata (Reading/Holy Name) and Kathryn Stallings (Mechanicsburg/Mechanicsburg) have proven to be a formidable force in the middle. LaFata notched 18 kills and 10 blocks against Edinboro, and now has 380 kills and 104 blocks on the season. Stallings led The Haven offense with 24 kills over Edinboro. She has recorded 371 kills and a team-high 149 blocks. Also key at the net has been sophomore outside hitter Lauren Nuzum (Manchester/Northeastern). Nuzum collected 20 kills in the championship game, and now has 130 for the season. Running the court is sophomore setter Shana Fessette (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Beekmantown Central). Fessette recorded 85 assists in the title game, and is currently averaging 11.54 assists per game with 1373 overall. Shoring up the defense is senior Tamee Dickey (Bethel Park/Bethel Park). Dickey picked up 12 Fighting Scot attacks and has 214 digs on the season.

EDINBORO: No. 2 seed Edinboro University, the defending regional champion, enters competition this weekend with a 21-10 overall record. This is the Fighting Scots' sixth appearance in the Atlantic Championships, having won the crown and advanced to the Elite Eight twice, including last season. The Boro's 21 wins mark the fourth consecutive season they have accumulated more than 20 victories. Edinboro's 7-3 record in the PSAC West grasped the Fighting Scots a berth into the PSAC post-season tournament, where they advanced to the finals by rolling past PSAC East No. 1 seed Millersville, 3-0, before falling to Lock Haven in five games.

Leading the Boro's offensive attack are 1998 All-Atlantic Region middle Mandie Moyer (Milan, Ohio/Edison) and Jennifer Fuhrman (Hanover, Pa./Southwestern), along with opposite hitter Erica Shaffer (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg). Fuhrman has posted a team-high of 421 kills, including 22 in the conference finals. Moyer leads the conference and is among NCAA leaders in hitting percentage (.393) after registering 355 kills. Shaffer has recorded 277 kills, and is second in the PSAC and also among national leaders in hitting percentage (.359). All three pose a formidable threat to opponent offenses as well, as all three have posted over 100 blocks for the season. Should the opponent get the ball past the front line, the Scots have a number of individuals who have showed skill on the backline, including frosh Stephanie Burner (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper Saint Clair), who also has recorded 225 kills this season, Abby Galcik (Brackenridge, Pa./Indiana (Pa.) University), Dana Czerwonka (Hamburg, N.Y./Frontier), and Katie Quatman (Cincinnati, Ohio/Anderson). At the setter position is sophomore Claudia Rech (North Aurora, Ill./Batavia), who is currently averaging a nationally-ranked 12.77 assists per game.

LEES-McRAE: The third seed in the tournament belongs to a newcomer in the upper echelon of the regional scene, Lees-McRae College. The Bobcats (35-5) have taken the Carolinas-Virginia Athletic Conference by storm of late, having recorded their second-consecutive conference championship this season, as well as notching their third straight regular season title with a flawless 16-0 record. The Lees-McRae squad has registered 320 service aces for an average 2.52 aces per game to rank ninth in NCAA Division II, and is also 13th in the nation in winning percentage (.875).

Leading the Bobcat's surge in the regional arena is CVAC Player of the Year Jen Calderwood (Boise, Idaho/Albertson College). Calderwood, an outside hitter, is third in the CVAC in kills with 440 for an average 3.55 successful attempts per game. She has also been able to score points from behind the service line, ranked seventh in NCAA Division II with 0.69 aces per game (85 total). Alongside of Calderwood is outside hitter Maureen Arnold (Rawlins, Wyo./Northwest College). Arnold was named to the CVAC All-Tournament team, and posts 3.15 kills per game with 388 on the season. Also an All-CVAC Tournament team selection was junior setter Jenny McKnight (Boise, Idaho/College of Southern Idaho), who averages 10.91 assist per game.

CHARLESTON: The University of Charleston (W.V.) is no stranger to the NCAA Atlantic Region Championships, as this marks its fourth appearance. Though injury-ridden for much of the season, UC was the conference regular season and post-season tournament runner-up. Now 28-8 overall, Charleston has compiled a 1-3 mark in NCAA competition, having advanced to the title game against Edinboro University last season. The Golden Eagles are under the direction of seventh year head coach Bren Stevens, who earned her 200th win as a collegiate coach this season.

Charleston can attribute much of its success to the trio of First Team All-WVIAC Nicole LaFollette (Longmont, Colo.), All-WVIAC Mary Weisensee (West Linn, Ore.), and Andrea Rivelli (Milwaukie, Ore.).

November 9, 1999 -- LHU Women's Volleyball to Enter PSAC Championship Play

The Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania women's volleyball team, under the guidance of ninth-year head coach Tom Justice, will travel to Millersville University of Pennsylvania for the 21st Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Volleyball Championships on Friday through Saturday, November 12-13. The Lady Eagles, 28-5 overall, won their second-straight PSAC West regular-season title by going 10-0 in conference play, the first time a Haven squad has been perfect in divisional competition. This marks the fifth appearance of the Lady Eagles in PSAC post-season competition. Lock Haven has also advanced to the final game in the last three years, winning the title in 1996.

Lock Haven has taken the NCAA Division II Atlantic Region by storm, already registering its second-best win total in the program's nine-year history (LHU went 31-16 in 1997), and maintaining the No. 1 ranking in the region all season long. The Haven also recorded its longest winning streak, capturing 19 consecutive match victories at one point during the season.

The Haven is paced by senior outside hitter Sarah Schall (Shippensburg/Shippensburg). Schall, a two-time PSAC West Player of the Year and three-time All-Region player, leads the Lady Eagles in kills (354) and digs (277). The middle tandem of juniors Stefanie LaFata (Reading/Holy Name) and Kathryn Stallings (Mechanicsburg/Mechanicsburg) has also come on strong this season. LaFata boasts 338 kills and a team-best .370 hitting percentage, 86 blocks, and a team-high 54 service aces. Stallings is just as accurate at the net, hitting at a .348 clip with 229 kills. She has a team-high 135 blocks (39 solo). One of the best overall athletes on the team is sophomore setter Shana Fessette (Plattsburgh/Beekmantown Central). Fessette tallies 1208 assists for an average of 11.29 per game. She is third on the team with 140 digs, and has also been key behind the service line with 46 service aces. Senior defensive specialist Tamee Dickey (Bethel Park/Bethel Park) has been the backbone of The Haven defense behind the block, registering 194 digs. She also has been a big performer from the service line with 47 aces.

West Chester University, Lock Haven's semifinal opponent, came on strong towards the end of the regular season winning its final eight matches and clinching the playoff spot by defeating Kutztown, 3-0, in the last match of its conference schedule. The Golden Rams benefit from a balanced attack, led by the offensive firepower of outside hitters junior Liz Huber and senior Beth Olney. Huber, who transferred to West Chester from Lock Haven before this season, leads the Golden Rams with 208 kills, and is also among the top on the squad in digs (256) and service aces (30). Olney has registered 192 kills this season, and is also one of the team's defensive leaders with 317 digs and 75 blocks (37 solo). Also big at the net is junior middle Heather Gwynn, who has stopped 67 attacks, 31 of those solo blocks. Freshman setter Gretta Neff has distributed 576 assists for the season.

The Lady Eagles have gone 4-0 in regular season matches played against PSAC post-season tournament participants with two wins apiece over Edinboro and Millersville. The last time The Haven competed against West Chester was in 1997, taking a 3-0 win over the Golden Rams at the Shippensburg University tournament.

The winners of the semifinal contests on Friday will clash on Saturday, November 13, at 5 p.m. for the conference crown. Edinboro University has won the title the past two seasons. Lock Haven was the title winner in 1996.
