LHU Softball Headed to PSAC Tournament

   
  (Lock Haven, Pa.) -  The Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania softball team (26-13, 16-4 PSAC West) is slated to compete in the 2004 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) softball tournament from Friday through Saturday, April 30 through May 1, hosted by California (Pa.) University at Lilly Field at Roadman Park.
              The Lady Eagles finished second in the PSAC Western Division with a ledger of 16-4 against conference opponents. California University , ranked second in the Mid-Atlantic Region and 15th in the nation, posted the best record in the West by going 17-3 in divisional play and 29-7 overall.  Shippensburg University , currently the No. 2-ranked team in the nation and seated first in the region, is 40-4 overall and went 21-2 in PSAC Eastern Division action.  Taking the East second seed was Kutztown University who went 15-9 in divisional games while sporting a 27-15 overall mark.
                The PSAC softball tournament is played using a double-elimination format. 
California and Kutztown square off in Game One at 10 a.m. on Friday morning followed by the Lady Eagles against Shippensburg at noon .  The losers of both games will play an elimination game at 2 p.m. , and the winners of the first two games match up at 4 p.m.
                Play resumes on Saturday morning at
11 a.m. when the winner of Game Three takes on the loser of Game Four.  The championship game is scheduled for 1 p.m. , however, if a seventh game is needed it will immediately follow Game Six at approximately 3 p.m.

               This is Lock Haven’s 16th PSAC tournament appearance and the second under head coach Kelley Green. The last time the Haven qualified for the playoffs was 2002, when the Lady Eagles went 1-2 and finished in third place. Lock Haven has one conference title, coming back in 1982 under then-head coach Don Keener, and has also finished as the runner-up on five occasions. 
                The 2004 Lady Eagles hold a 2-3 record against PSAC championship teams, scoring both victories over California (10-6, 8-0). Lock Haven is 2-2 versus California , 0-1 against Shippensburg, and 0-0 against Kutztown.  Since returning from its Florida trip in the early season, LHU has gone 18-6 including wins in its last 13 games. 
                The Haven ranks fourth in the conference with a .295 batting average paced by centerfielder Lynn Spiezio (Trooper/Methacton), who is hitting .399. Spiezio is also quick on the base paths, logging a PSAC high of 27 stolen bases.  Designated player Kelly Deitrick (Danville/Danville) has also been consistent at the plate, hitting .351 with a team-best 25 RBI.  Second baseman Heather Johnson (Williamsport/Williamsport) leads the squad with nine doubles along with a .328 batting average, while Courtney Hughes (Schwenksville/Souderton) owns a .516 slugging percentage after cranking out 14 extra-base hits, including a team high of five home runs.
                The Lock Haven pitching staff is rated fifth in the PSAC in team pitching with a 1.64 combined earned runs average.  The pitcher’s circle is also the source of 212 strikeouts this season, the highest total on the books since the 1989 campaign.  Sophomore Shona Guevara ( Chino Hills , Calif. /Rueben S. Ayala) headlines the starting trio, posting a 12-5 record and a 1.58 ERA.  She tossed seven wins by shutout and has struck out 120 batters. Junior Molly Shuey (Tower City/Williams Valley) is 9-4 on the season with a 2.10 ERA, while freshman Stephanie Kinch ( Painesville , Ohio / Riverside ) has the lowest ERA of the three at 1.17 with a 5-4 ledger.
