Lock Haven Ranks Third in Dixon Trophy Standings Through Fall Season

(Lock Haven, Pa.) -  Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania ranks third in the final Fall 2003 standings of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference’s (PSAC) Dixon Trophy race as released by the league office.
The Dixon Trophy is named after F. Eugene Dixon, Jr., former chairman of the Board of Governors of the State System of Higher Education.  It has been awarded annually since 1995 to the PSAC member institution that accumulates the most points based on results of conference playoffs and/or regular-season records.  Each institution’s point total is calculated by adding its top six men’s finishes and top six women’s finishes in 23 conference sports.
Edinboro University is the current leader, posting 58.5 points. Indiana ( Pa. ) University holds down the second spot with 56 points. Lock Haven is third with 54.5 points, including a conference-best total of 35 points from its women’s teams.  East Stroudsburg University and Kutztown University both have 52.5 points to share in fourth place.

Lock Haven teams capturing PSAC championships in the fall included volleyball and men’s cross country. The women’s soccer team scored a runner-up finish, and the field hockey team was a PSAC tournament semifinalist.
Lock Haven had much success on the national level in addition to its conference success, as the men's cross country team captured the East Region title and placed 16th at the NCAA Division II National Championships. The volleyball team won the Atlantic Region championship and advanced to the NCAA Division II Elite Eight.  Over the course of the fall season, The Haven had five All-Americans and 23 student-athletes earned All-PSAC honors.  Two athletes were selected as PSAC Athlete of the Year, two more earned PSAC Rookie of the Year honors, and one coach was named PSAC and Regional Coach of the Year.
