The Dragons boast two ranked wrestlers in 197-pounder Chris Jones and 125-pounder Rob Rebmann. Jones, a returning NCAA qualifier who is fourth in the nation, is now 8-1 on the season after defeating his Badger opponent Lee Kraemer, 12-5, and winning this year’s Body Bar Invitational. Rebmann enters the weekend ranked 11th and undefeated at 8-0, winning both the Cortland Open and Body Bar Invitational. Another 125-pounder, Zach Makovsky, has built a 7-3 ledger.
Joe Cristaldi, a 2003 NCAA participant, picked up a 6-4 victory over his ranked Wisconsin opponent Ed Gutnik last weekend. Cristaldi, now 6-2 on the season, has a runner up finish at the Cortland Open and a third-place finish at the Body Bar invite on his resume.
Another 6-2 Dragon grappler is 149-pounder Mark Cartella, the runner-up at the Body Bar Invitational and a 2-0 winner over Wisconsin’s Cole Wunnicke. At 141 pounds, Chris Renninger is 6-4 and 157-pounder Ray Lamb is 6-5. Matt Brienza at 165 pounds and Josh Fisk at 174 pounds are both 5-5, while Pat Shufelt is 6-4 at 184 pounds. Chris Cowen owns a 3-4 record at heavyweight.

PITT-JOHNSTOWN: The Mountain Cats of Pitt-Johnstown, ranked eighth in the NCAA Division II pre-season coaches poll, are 3-0 in dual meet action entering into this weekend. Pitt-Johnstown posted its dual meet wins over Delaware Valley College (22-13), Kutztown University (46-0) and Shippensburg University (21-15). Five Division II All-Americans return for Pitt-Johnstown, including Thad Benton at 133 pounds, Jason Nestor at 141 pounds, John Burda at 174 pounds, Randy Pyle at 184 pounds and Howard Bell at 197 pounds.

In their latest dual meet versus Shippensburg, returning national qualifier Ryon Mazzocco (133 lbs.), Nestor (141 lbs.), Ryan Ickes (149 lbs.), also a nationals qualifier, Craig Hight (174 lbs.), Bell (197 lbs.) and heavyweight Zach Majocha all posted wins.

Below is the LHU weight-by-weight preview:

125: Sophomore Jim Collins (Jonestown/Northern Lebanon) retains the starting spot here. Collins is now 3-3 overall, most recently scoring a 9-4 decision against Millersville’s Adam Bunting.

133: Junior James Barnes (Windsor, Conn./Windsor) took the mat against Millersville last week, coming from behind to pin the Marauders’ Dave Roberts in 5:58. Barnes is 5-4 on the season. Freshman Casey Moore (Beech Creek/Central Mountain) could also see a start at 133 pounds, currently 7-4 overall.

141: The Bald Eagles will have two red-shirt freshmen to work with at 141 pounds, Nick Hawrylchak (Altamont, N.Y./Guildeyland) and Brent Hoover (Halifax/Halifax). Hawrylchak is currently 2-6, losing by fall to Millersville’s Derek Sola. Hoover is 1-4 overall.

149: Just two victories away from being the 14th Bald Eagle grappler to achieve 100 career wins, 149-pounder Mike Maney (Clarence/Bald Eagle Area) most recently scored a 23-8 technical fall over Shawn Blanchard of Millersville in dual meet action. Maney, now 98-23 over his career, is ranked 10th in the nation and is 13-2 this season with four wins by pin and two by technical fall. Red-shirt freshman Brian Hoover (Halifax/Halifax) is 5-6 in action at 149 pounds, and junior Tory Leitch (Lock Haven/Central Mountain), at 2-3, could also see mat time.

157: Lock Haven will mat either senior Charlie Brenneman (Hollidaysburg/Hollidaysburg) or red-shirt freshman Seth Martin (Selinsgrove/Selinsgrove) at 157 pounds. Brenneman is the Bald Eagle leader with 14 wins for an overall mark of 14-2 on the season. In most recent action Brenneman pinned MU’s Steve Lucasey in 1:24, his first win by fall this year. Martin is 4-6, last competing at the Mat-Town tournament where he went 1-2.

165: Senior Jason Gilligan (Brookville/Brookville) will handle responsibilities at 165 pounds, and could be aided by senior David Beard (Lititz/Warwick). Gilligan is now 4-1 overall, recording the team’s second fastest fall this season in 37 seconds against Millersville’s Craig Pequignot. Beard is 3-8 but went 2-2 this past weekend at the Penn State Open including wins over Mike Ragusa of Buffalo (8-6; sv) and Mike Maceroli of Lehigh (F 1:41).

174: The Haven is still trying to sort things out at 174 pounds, and could use any of the trio of Dan Riggs (Hanover/Delone Catholic), Ryan Summers (Plainwell, Mich./Plainwell) and Derrick Morgan (Milan/Athens). Riggs is 1-3 overall, getting caught for a loss by fall against Millersville’s Curtis Yeager in the dual meet. Summers is 5-5 on the season, while Morgan, who placed fourth at the Edinboro Open as an unattached wrestler last year, has a blank slate in 2003-04.

184: Senior Mike Greenberg (Canton/Canton) overpowered Millersville’s Mark Knock in the dual meet, leading 4-2 including a pair of near fall points before the Marauder halted the match to give Greenberg the win by default. Greenberg has a current 5-4 season record.

197: No. 11-ranked Morgan Horner (Hasbrouck Heights, N.J./Hasbrouck Heights) is 9-2 on the season following his first period pin against Millersville’s Aaron Smith. Three of Horner’s wins have been by fall and another two have come by major decision. While Drexel’s No. 4-ranked Chris Jones did wrestle in the dual meet versus LHU last season, Horner was wrestling at 184 pounds.

HWT: Senior Steve Itterly (Bethlehem/Nazareth) or sophomore Tim Meyers (Mill Hall/Central Mountain) will represent the Bald Eagles at heavyweight. Itterly came from behind to score a 6-2 decision over Millersville’s Mike Davidowich last week, upping his season total to 4-2. Meyers is 1-4 on the season.

UP NEXT: Several Lock Haven University wrestlers will be in competition at the Midlands Open from Dec. 29-30. The Bald Eagles’ next dual meet action is from Jan 9-10, when they will travel to Hampton, Va., for the Virginia Duals.
