(Lock
Haven, Pa.) - Three Lock Haven University wrestlers, Mike Maney (Clarence/Bald Eagle
Area), Jason Gilligan (Brookville/Brookville) and Morgan Horner (Hasbrouck Heights, N.J./Hasbrouck
Heights), will travel to Welsh-Ryan Arena in Evanston, Ill., to compete at the 41st Midlands Wrestling Championships from Dec. 29-30.
THE MIDLANDS: Another highly competitive field is expected at the 41st go-around of the Midlands Wrestling Championships. Just three of the 2002 champions are slated to return, but competition will not be scarce as the strong field includes three of InterMat’s top-ranked grapplers along with another six wrestlers earning the No. 2 national ranking.
MANEY EARNS NO. 6 SEED: With three wins last weekend, two-time All-American Mike Maney etched his name into Bald Eagle history as the 14th grappler to reach 100 wins. But there is little time to relish in that accomplishment as No. 10-ranked Maney, now 16-2 this season, looks ahead to the Midlands competition and a chance to add a new piece of hardware to his collection. Earning the No. 6 seed for the tournament, he could come up against returning Midlands champion and 2003 Mat-Town titlist Dustin Manotti of Cornell, to whom Maney lost, 6-2, in the championship final. Manotti is currently ranked second in the nation at 149 pounds, and picks up the tournament’s top seed. Also earning seeds include Schultz Wrestling Club’s #2 Mike Mendoza, Iowa State’s #3 Trent Paulson, the New York AC’s #4 Jon Masa and Iowa’s Ty Eustice, seeded fifth. The seventh seed went to Northern Illinois’ Josh Wooten, Adrian Austin of George Mason is eighth while Illinois’ Carl Ferry rounds out the pre-tournament selections in ninth.

UNSEEDED GILLIGAN READY FOR CHALLENGE: Bald Eagle senior Jason Gilligan is 6-2 this season at 165 pounds, placing sixth at the Mat-Town tournament while going 2-1 at last weekend’s Clarion Duals. Gilligan, a two-time NCAA qualifier, is no stranger to the top level of competition and will look to place among a field of highly-touted grapplers. Promoted as potentially the most wide-open weight class, the Bald Eagle could run into Ohio State’s top-seeded John Clark, Iowa State’s No. 2-seeded Nick
Passolano, or No. 3-seeded David Bolyard of Central Michigan. Rounding out the 165-pound bracket’s pre-tournament picks are Pittsburgh’s Zach Doll, the 2003 Mat-Town champion, Wyoming’s Levi
Prevost, Ohio Int. WC’s Ken Ramsey, Hofstra’s Ralph Everett, Boston’s Leighton Brady and Cornell’s Joe
Mazzurco.
HORNER IS NO. 9 PRE-TOURNEY PICK: Sophomore 197-pounder Morgan Horner inched up in the national rankings, moving into the top ten with a No. 9 rating after going 3-0 this past weekend including an 8-6 win over then fourth ranked Chris Jones of Drexel. Now 12-2 on the season, Horner could face a familiar competitor in the top-seeded and No. 2-ranked Chris Skretkowicz of
Hofstra. The two wrestlers met twice last season with two wins for the Hofstra grappler including a 14-8 decision at the NCAA tournament. Montana Northern’s Emmett Willson is seeded second, while 2003 Mat-Town champion Matt Greenberg of Cornell is the third seed. Other pre-tournament seeds from the fourth through eighth slots include Iowa’s Ryan
Fulsaas, Cal-Bakersfield’s Matt Monteiro, Schultz WC’s Nate Patrick, Jason Potter of Illinois and Indiana’s Pat
DeGain.
UP NEXT: The Bald Eagles’ next dual meet action is from Jan 9-10, when they will travel to Hampton, Va., for the Virginia Duals.
