Below is the LHU weight-by-weight preview:
125: The Bald Eagles will mat regular starter Jim Collins (Jonestown/Northern Lebanon) at 125 pounds. Collins, now 5-4 overall, went 2-1 in his most recent competition at the Clarion Duals, scoring a 7-5 decision against Pitt-Johnstown’s Ryan Mazzocco while picking up a forfeit win in the Drexel match. His only loss came against Kent State’s Drew
Opfer, a fall in 2:56.
133: Lock Haven leaves its options open when it comes to which wrestler to mat at 133 pounds, taking four Bald Eagles along for the trip. Junior
James Barnes (Windsor, Conn./Windsor) wrestled all three matches in December’s Clarion Duals up one weight class at 141 pounds and is now 6-6 on the season, pinning Kent State’s Nate Daugherty in 2:35 while losing to both Chris Renninger of Drexel (F; 3:41) and Jason Nestor of Pitt-Johnstown (4-0). Freshman
Casey Moore (Beech Creek/Central Mountain) wrestled the 133 pound matches at the Clarion Duals, going 0-3 to bring his season ledger to 7-7. Two others who could step in include seniors
Dave Predko (Ridgway/Ridgway) and John Holsinger (Pennsbury/Quakertown). Predko is 0-4 on the season, while Holsinger is 2-6.
141: The Haven coaches introduce a new face into the lineup in freshman
Ian McGoldrick (Brodheadsville/Pleasant Valley). McGoldrick, a transfer from The Citadel, posted a 57-6 record while wrestling for Pleasant Valley, picking up All-America honors in the 2000 Junior Greco Nationals while placing seventh at 135 pounds in the 2003 PIAA Championships.
149: No. 11-ranked Mike Maney (Clarence/Bald Eagle Area), now 19-3 on the season, placed eighth at the Midlands Wrestling Championship, his only loss coming against eventual champion Trent Paulson of Iowa State, 3-1. Maney had shut out his first two opponents, winning by technical fall, 15-0, against Penn’s Rob
Hitschler, and a 5-0 decision versus Illinois’ Cal Ferry. He then won his first bout in the consolation round before forfeiting (medical) the next two matches to finish eighth place.
Maney is joined by red-shirt freshman
Brian Hoover (Halifax/Halifax) and Nick Hawrylchak (Altamont, N.Y./Guildeyland). Hoover is 5-6 overall while Hawrylchak is 2-6 on the season.
157: Senior Charlie Brenneman (Hollidaysburg/Hollidaysburg) and red-shirt freshman
Seth Martin (Selinsgrove/Selinsgrove) make up the 157 pound travel list. Martin is 4-6 on the season.
Brenneman, 16-3 on the season, won two of three matches at the Clarion Duals. The senior picked up a 10-1 major decision over Drexel’s John Neidrich and an 8-2 decision over Pitt-Johnstown’s Matt
Roncolato. His only loss of the day was against Kent State’s Mike Tolar, 7-2.
165: The Bald Eagles will be without senior Jason Gilligan (Brookville/Brookville) at 165 pounds this weekend due to academic commitments, so junior
David Beard (Lititz/Warwick) will take over the reigns at 165 pounds. Beard is 3-8 on the season, most recently going 2-2 at the Penn State Open.
174/184: Like the 133-pound weight class, the 174 pound vacancy will be filled by
committe, consisting of Derrick Morgan (Milan/Athens), Ryan Summers (Plainwell, Mich./Plainwell) or
Dan Riggs (Hanover/Delone Catholic). Morgan, a red-shirt freshman, is 0-2 on the season after seeing his first action of the season at the Clarion Duals where he lost a 3-2 decision to Kent State’s Ardian Ramadani and a 3-1 decision to Pitt-Johnstown’s John
Burda. Summers, also a red-shirt frosh, is 5-5, while Riggs, who won his match at the Clarion Duals in a 12-7 decision over Josh Fisk of Drexel, is now 2-3 this season. Any of these three wrestlers could also fill in at either 184 or 197 pounds.
184/197: Senior Mike Greenberg (Canton/Canton) owns a 5-7 ledger this season, suffering three-straight setbacks against his opponents at the Clarion Duals. Red-shirt freshman
Carlos Ponce (Hialeah, Fla./Hialeah Miami Lakes) is 5-6 and could also take the mat at 184 pounds if needed. Both Greenberg and Ponce could also be asked to help out at 197 pounds.
HWT: Both senior Steve Itterly (Bethlehem/Nazareth) and sophomore
Tim Meyers (Mill Hall/Central Mountain) make the journey to Virginia, Itterly holding on to a 5-4 record while Meyers is 1-4 over the early season. Itterly went 1-2 at the Clarion Duals, earning a 6-1 win over Kent State’s Nick Hiller. His two losses came against Drexel’s Al
Shenko, 5-3, and Pitt-Johnstown’s Zach Majorcha, 8-2.
UP NEXT: The Bald Eagles will open up Eastern Wrestling League action on the road at Virginia Tech on Fri., Jan. 16, at 7:30 p.m.
