Lock Haven Wrestlers Open EWL Competition at Virginia Tech

   
  (Lock Haven, Pa.) -  Lock Haven University wrestling opens up Eastern Wrestling League (EWL) competition on Fri., Jan. 16, on the road at Virginia Tech (5-2, 0-0 EWL) at 7 p.m.. The Bald Eagles are 3-3 in dual meets. 

SERIES RECORD VERSUS VIRGINIA TECH: 
Lock Haven owns a 6-0-0 mark against the Hokies of Virginia Tech. In dual action last season, Lock Haven scored a 29-15 victory over the Hokies in Thomas Fieldhouse. 

2003 EWL RESULTS:   
      The Bald Eagles went 3-4 in the EWL last season and placed fourth at the league tournament. The Hokies were winless at 0-6 in the EWL and fnished seventh at the league championships.

VIRGINIA TECH
         
Under the guidance of eighth year head coach Keith Mourlam, the Hokies of Virginia Tech have built a 5-2 dual meet ledger in the 2003-04 season. Most recently Virginia Tech competed at the North Carolina State Duals, defeating both Campbell University, 36-13, and UNC Greensboro, 24-12, but falling to the host team, 20-18. 
         Two Hokies are nationally ranked, No. 10-ranked David Hoffman at 133 pounds and No. 20-ranked Chris Stith at 165 pounds. Stith, along with Reed Carpenter at 149 pounds and 174-pounder Steve Borja, all went 3-0 at the NC State Duals. Stith improved to 20-7 on the season, while Carpenter moved to 20-5 and Borja improved to 15-8. Hoffman went 2-0 at the duals, improving to 12-2. 
         Other probable starters for Virginia Tech include freshman Ryan Broughman (5-10) at 125 pounds. Sophomore Aaron Brown (5-9) is the probable at 141 pounds, and red-shirt freshman Andrew Donofrio (7-7) is likely to see the mat at 157 pounds. Junior Shaun Guttridge (5-10) is slated for the start at 184 pounds, while junior Canaan Prater (10-7) and senior Kris Wiedegreen (9-8) will wrestle at 197 and heavyweight, respectively.

Below is the LHU weight-by-weight preview:

125: Sophomore Jim Collins (Jonestown/Northern Lebanon) will weigh in at 125 pounds. He owns a 5-6 overall ledger. In his last outing, Collins lost by only one point to No. 15-ranked Tom Clum of Wisconsin, 5-4, before an 8-4 loss against Wyoming’s Bryce Leonhardt. 

133: The Bald Eagles will start either junior James Barnes (Windsor, Conn./Windsor) or freshman Casey Moore (Beech Creek/Central Mountain) against Tech’s No. 10-ranked David Hoffman. Barnes is 6-7 on the season, last called into action against Wyoming’s Tyson Shatto (L, 6-2) at the Virginia Duals. Moore owns a 7-7 overall record, most recently wrestling at the Clarion Duals in December.

141: Freshman Ian McGoldrick (Brodheadsville/Pleasant Valley) will wrestle at 141 pounds. McGoldrick went 0-2 at the Virginia Duals after suffering a 7-0 loss against Wisconsin’s Tyler Laudon and a close 4-3 loss to Wyoming’s Blake Gunter.

149: The spotlight bout of the evening could come at 149 pounds if Lock Haven’s No. 10-ranked Mike Maney (Clarence/Bald Eagle Area) and Tech’s Reed Carpenter (20-5), the EWL Wrestler of the Week, in fact match up. Maney is 21-3 on the season and moved back into the top ten after two wins at the Duals. The senior Bald Eagle pinned both his opponents, taking the six-point victories from Wisconsin’s Kyle West in 2:10 and Wyoming’s Patrick Shuler in 3:02. Maney has six pins to his credit this season along with three technical falls. 

157: Senior Charlie Brenneman (Hollidaysburg/Hollidaysburg) wrestled to a 1-1 outcome at the Virginia Duals to move his overall mark to 17-4. Brenneman picked up a decisive 8-3 win over No. 20-ranked Tyler Turner of Wisconsin before a 7-2 loss against Wyoming’s Andrew Shuler. 

165: The Bald Eagles have Jason Gilligan (Brookville/Brookville) back in the lineup to battle No. 20-ranked Chris Stith after the senior starter stayed behind last weekend due to academic commitments. Gilligan is 7-4 on the season.

174: Stepping in at 174 pounds could be either Derrick Morgan (Milan/Athens) or Dan Riggs (Hanover/Delone Catholic). Morgan, a red-shirt freshman, is 0-2 on the season. Riggs is now 2-4 following a 5-2 loss to Wyoming’s Josh Prevost. 

184: Senior Mike Greenberg (Canton/Canton) split a pair of matches at the Virginia Duals, losing to Wisconsin’s Brady Reinke, 8-2, before scoring a 4-1 decision over Sam Wendland of Wyoming. Greenberg is 6-8 on the season. 

197: Red-shirt freshman Carlos Ponce (Hialeah, Fla./Hialeah Miami Lakes) is now 5-8 after taking over at 197 pounds last weekend. Ponce lost both his matches, suffering a fall versus Wisconsin’s Lee Kraemer and a 3-0 decision against Malcolm Havens of Wyoming.

HWT: The usual occupants of this weight class will travel to Blacksburg, Va. -- senior Steve Itterly (Bethlehem/Nazareth) and sophomore Tim Meyers (Mill Hall/Central Mountain). Meyers remains at 1-4 on the season. Itterly went 1-1 at the Virginia Duals, pocketing the forfeit win against Wisconsin while losing an 8-3 decision versus Dusty Hoffschneider of Wyoming. He is now 6-5 overall.

UP NEXT: The Bald Eagles return home to Thomas Fieldhouse on Fri., Jan. 23, to face EWL and PSAC opponent Edinboro University at 7:30 p.m.
