Bald Eagle Football Team Announces 2003 Awards

(Lock Haven, Pa.) - The
Lock
Haven
University
of Pennsylvania 2003 football team awards were announced recently at the annual
post-season banquet, honoring several individual players for excellence both on
and off the field. The Bald Eagles,
under the direction of fourth-year head coach Mark Luther, went 3-8 overall and
posted a 1-5 mark in the PSAC Western Division.

Ted Lyons Outstanding Freshman
Dan Hagerman (Fr., K/P, Scottdale/Southmoreland)
Dr.
Ted Lyons was a member of the 1908 LHU Football team and a graduate of LHU.
Lyons
and his good friend and teammate Winfield Stugart attended many homecoming
games, and were named honorary co-captains for the 1979 Championship team.

Jack Most Improved Player
Jason Walther (Fr., TE, Elizabethtown/Elizabethtown)
The
Hubert Jack Most Improved Player award is given in memory of long-time LHU Head
Football Coach Hubert Jack. Coach
Jack was always striving for improvement and knew the value of hard work and
perseverance. Right up to his death
in 1981, Coach Jack was still giving advice and comparing notes with former
players and coaches.

Award
honors E. Ross Nevel for his dedication during his tenure as Sports Information
Director at Lock Haven until 1981. Nevel
was always upbeat and positive and did the little things to inspire the players
and coaches.

and Carolyn Perry Academic Recognition
Robert
and Carolyn Perry have served as an academic support team for the LHU Football
program since the early 1970’s. Awards
for the highest GPA for a senior, junior and sophomore in addition to the
highest overall GPA are given in their names.

Carman was the defensive coordinator at Lock Haven from 1978-81. A graduate of
Slippery

, he played as a defensive back with a fierce competitive attitude. Carman
coaches the same way and results were evident during his tenure at LHU.
This award goes to a defensive player who was a leader on the field and
exhibited the desire and commitment to be the best.

“Big Train” Dintiman Offensive MVP
Marcus Burkley (Sr., WR, Pittsburgh/Woodland Hills)
George
Dintiman was an outstanding halfback on the 1955-58 LHU football squad who was
drafted in the 27th round
by the Baltimore Colts of the National Football League.
The Offensive MVP is the individual who has demonstrated the necessary
attitude, leadership and skills which make them an integral part of the success
for which the offense achieves.

L. McGill Memorial Leadership Award
Bill Cook (Sr., OL, York/Central York)
Presented
to the outstanding senior football player exemplifying the qualities of Ed
McGill, who was a quarterback at
Lock
Haven
University
from 1970-74 when he became ill with
Hodgkins Disease. Although he could no longer play, he stayed on his senior
year to coach.

The
Willis Endowed Scholarship is named after LHU President Craig Dean Willis and
is awarded annually to the senior football player who exhibits the
characteristics of a true student-athlete – citizenship, commitment,
dedication, leadership and a positive attitude both in the classroom and on the
playing field.
