(Lock
Haven, Pa.) - Lock Haven
University
of Pennsylvania
field hockey head coach Pat Rudy will take her Lady Eagle squad on a tour
through
Scotland
and Ireland
at the end of this month, traveling abroad from May 17-27.
“It’s
a good experience for all of them to travel, meet people and experience a
different culture,” said Coach Rudy. “We’ve had several coaches from
Europe
come and work our camps, and this is now our opportunity to go and experience
their customs and traditions.”
“Just
traveling is a new experience for some of my players and some may or may not go
over again in the future. Playing a sport is a great way to meet new
people and learn new cultures – you always have that common bond with
everyone you meet.”
The
Lady Eagles will play three games in
Edinburgh, Scotland, against the Forresters Hockey Club, the Dunfermline-Carnegie Hockey Club and
the MIM Edinburgh Hockey Club. Lock Haven then travels to
Dublin,
Ireland, where they are scheduled to meet up against the Corinthians Hockey Club and
on to Limerick,
Ireland, where they will face the Crescent College Hockey Club.
“The
hockey there is really good. It’s a high level passing game and they don’t
play on anything but turf. Since the hockey there is all organized in a club
system instead of like here in the collegiate environment, the club teams can
have some older and more experienced players who play a smart, high level of
hockey.”
On-the-field
preparations were exceeded only by the extensive fundraising that went into
making the trip possible, the Lady Eagles hosting several indoor and outdoor
tournaments, selling candles and a letter-writing campaign to solicit donations
from friends of the program.
Over the span of the trip, several members of the team will be e-mailing
a diary of the trip back to the Sports Information Office for posting on the
website.
