Haven Wrestling Announces 2004 Recruiting Class

Lock
Haven
University
of
Pennsylvania
wrestling program has announced a list of 19 student-athletes who comprise its
recruiting class for the upcoming 2004-05 season.
“I’m very excited about this incoming class,” said Head Coach Rocky
Bonomo, who enters into his third season at the helm of the Bald Eagle program.
“They are good athletes, good students and good people. They all have
great potential. We’ve got guys capable of coming in here and helping this
team compete immediately, and each member of this incoming class will bring
more intensity into the wrestling room. Our staff is looking forward to them
joining the team next year.”
The 19 incoming wrestlers include a Pennsylvania Freestyle champion, a
Junior National Freestyle All-American and a National Prep placewinner along
with nine
Pennsylvania
state placewinners and four transfers.
Justin Johnson (Wyalusing/Wyalusing), an NCAA qualifier in 2002 at
184 pounds, and BJ Mikeska (Derry/Derry)
(165 lbs.) transfer in from
Bloomsburg
University
. Joshua
Fisk (Wyalusing/Wyalusing) joins the list of transfers after two seasons
competing at 174 pounds at
Drexel
University
while
Harrisburg
Area
Community College
’s Matt Barnett (Lancaster/Hempfield) (149
lbs.) has also decided to continue his career at Lock Haven.
Several local standouts are set to join the roster next season including
Bald Eagle Area High School’s Clint
Shirk (Julian/Bald Eagle Area) and Monty
Rockey (Port Matilda/Bald Eagle Area). Shirk, the third-place finisher in
the state AAA bracket at 135 pounds, was also listed among the Wrestling
USA Magazine’s Best 2004 Seniors and earned special mention on the Intermat
National Top 12 Seniors list. Rockey
was also third at the state tournament, placing in the 189 pound bracket. He
earned special mention on the Wrestling
USA
Magazine’s Best Seniors list.

Other local talent includes
Hughesville
High School
’s Rory McCoy
(Hughesville/Hughesville) who placed fourth at 171 pounds at the 2004 state
tourney along with
Loyalsock
Township
High School
’s Ben Hepburn (Williamsport/Loyalsock
Twp), a fifth-place state finisher at 189 pounds.
The
Bald Eagles add
Ohio
’s Madison Davis (
Ravenna
,
Ohio
/
Ravenna
City
) to the lower weight contingent.
Davis
was the state runner-up in both 2004 and 2003 and was ranked fifth in Wrestling
USA
’s Best Seniors at 103 pounds. Also
out of
Ohio
is Donnie Reinhart (Dublin,
Ohio/Dublin-Coffman), a state qualifier who is expected to compete at 184
pounds.
Other
wrestlers from out of the state include Sobhan
Namvar (
Needham
,
Mass.
/
Needham
), who took All-America honors at
the Junior National Freestyle Championships after placing sixth.
He was the
Massachusetts
state champion in 2004 and is listed among the Wrestling
USA Best Seniors at 171 pounds. David Dulski (Pasedena, Md./
Mt.
St.
Joseph
Academy
) was a National Prep Tournament
placewinner, finishing eighth overall at 140 pounds.
The
Haven welcomes the addition of state placewinner Corey
Scherin (Lancaster/Hempfield) to the roster.
Scherin garnered fourth at 145 pounds in the state AAA bracket in 2004.
Other state placewinners include heavyweight Damian Carbone (Wilkes-Barre/Elmer L. Meyers) (6th at 275
lbs.) and Jacob Lauffenburger
(Warren/Warren Area) (7th at 160 lbs.). Matthew Fittery (Denver/Cocalico) was a state qualifier at 140
pounds and enters the Haven’s program with a freestyle state championship
title on his resume.
The
Bald Eagles will also look to utilize the talents of Benjamin
Bolt (Milerton/Williamson) (141 lbs.), Tucker
Gordner (Leesport/Schuylkill Valley) (197 lbs.) and Andrew Martin (Carlisle/Big Spring) (165 lbs.).
