LHU's DeNault Named PSAC Field Hockey Athlete of
the Year
Alderfer Voted Rookie of the Year;
Seven Lady Eagles on All-PSAC Teams

’s Jen DeNault (Hamburg/Hamburg) was
selected as the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Athlete of the
Year and Mandy Alderfer
(Harleysville/Souderton) earned PSAC Rookie of the Year honors as voted on
by the league’s coaches. A total of seven Lady Eagles were selected to a spot
on the First or Second Team All-PSAC lists.
Shippensburg
University
’s Bertie Landis was voted the PSAC Coach of the
Year.
Jen DeNault, a senior back,
earns PSAC Athlete of the Year honors in addition to First Team All-PSAC
defense accolades. She is ranked 10th in the conference in scoring
with 10 goals and five assists, totaling 25 points and a 1.19 points per game
average. She is 11th in
goals per game at 0.48 per contest. Also
a standout on the other side of the field, DeNault helped direct the PSAC’s
second most effective defense, allowing just 0.81 goals per game.
Including this year’s selection, DeNault has earned first-team All-PSAC
honors three straight seasons. She was the PSAC Rookie of the Year as a
freshman, earning second-team all-conference honors that year.
DeNault is a three-time All-American and twice was selected to the NCAA
Division II All-Tournament team.
Haven freshman Mandy Alderfer
receives PSAC Rookie of the Year honors. Alderfer,
a forward, played a large role in the LHU offense, accounting for 11 goals.
She is tied for eighth in the league with 0.52 goals per game, and was
ranked 15th in points per game with 1.05.
Alderfer tallied four game-winning goals which is tied for fourth in the
conference. The only freshman on this year’s all-conference list, Alderfer
was a second-team offense pick.
Three Lady Eagles were selected to the First Team All-PSAC in addition
to DeNault -- Nikki Sweger
(Dauphin/Central Dauphin East), Courtney
Hughes (Schwenksville/Souderton) and Melissa
Stubblefield (
Carmel
, N.Y./Carmel).
Sophomore forward Nikki Sweger,
a second-team choice last season, is the current PSAC leader in goals with 21
scored and is second in both points, with 46, and points per game with 2.19.
She scored two or more goals in six games this season, including a four-goal,
one-assist effort against Slippery Rock.
Sophomore back Courtney Hughes
makes her second appearance on the all-conference list, this year earning first
team honors after a second-team selection in 2002.
Hughes helped to pilot a Haven defense that allowed 0.81 goals per game.
Also a key contributor on penalty corners, she scored five times and had
eight assists.
Melissa Stubblefield, a junior
goalkeeper, earns her second All-PSAC nod and her initial pick as a first-team
member. Stubblefield was second in
the PSAC with nine shutouts this season, wrapping up action with a 0.69 goals
against average, also the second best in the conference, and 63 saves.
Second-team All-PSAC selections from Lock Haven include Alderfer along
with Kellie Kulina (Hummelstown/Lower
Dauphin) and Sara Segerlin
(Penfield, N.Y./Webster).
Junior forward Kellie Kulina
picks up her third-straight second team All-PSAC accolade.
Kulina posted eight goals this season and is third in the PSAC and led
LHU with 12 assists.
The second-team selection is the first for senior midfielder/forward Sara
Segerlin, who recorded her best season with 10 goals and three assists. She
is ranked third in the PSAC in game-winning goals, scoring the deciding tally
on five occasions.
The 2003 Lady Eagle field hockey team went 17-4 overall and was 13-3 in
the PSAC. Lock Haven advanced to post-season play as the third seed in the PSAC
Tournament, bowing out to
Shippensburg
University
in the semifinals.
