Haven Volleyball To Face Indiana In PSAC

Haven
University
of Pennsylvania
volleyball team (26-5, 8-2 PSAC West) will face Indiana (Pa.) University (23-10, 6-4 PSAC West) in the Pennsylvania State Athletic
Conference (PSAC) post-season tournament quarterfinals on Tuesday, November 11,
at
7 p.m.
in Thomas Fieldhouse.
The Lady Eagles, the
regular season co-champion along with Edinboro University (24-10, 8-2 PSAC
West), earned the second seed in the Western Division after the tie-breaker
ended in favor of the Fighting Scots. Indiana
(Pa.) is the third seed from the West. Kutztown
University
(21-8, 10-0 PSAC East), West Chester
University
(17-14, 7-3 PSAC East) and Shippensburg
University
(14-17, 5-5 PSAC East) are the first through third seeds in the Eastern
Division.
Lock Haven: The
Lady Eagles make their return to the PSAC tournament following a one-year
absence, marking their eighth overall appearance.
LHU has won three PSAC tournament championships, with wins coming in
1996, 1999 and 2000. The Haven captured a share of the regular-season title in
the Western Division with an 8-2 conference mark, the seventh time in program
history that LHU has either owned outright or earned a share of the divisional
crown.
Haven
losses in the conference were both on the road, coming against Edinboro, 3-1,
and most recently, against its quarterfinal opponent, Indiana,
3-2.
The
Lady Eagles benefit from a balanced attack, boasting seven players with 100 or
more kills. Freshman middle Cherry
Li (Shanghai,
China) leads the PSAC in attack
percentage hitting at a .486 clip with 437 kills.
Li also paces the Haven with 383 digs and 109 blocks.
Sophomore
outside hitter Allison Wade (Duncansville/Hollidaysburg) has 192 kills (.202 attack
pct.) along with 182 digs. Junior outside hitter Kristi Kauffman (York/Central York) and junior opposite hitter Amanda Snyder (Portsmouth, Va./Churchland) have both recorded 174
kills. Kauffman is second on the
squad with 247 digs and has 28 service aces, while Snyder follows with 230 digs
in addition to 43 blocks and 35 aces.

Junior middle Lillian Bortoto (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Campos
Salles) is credited with 166 kills
and is also a defensive threat at the net with 91 blocks.
Outside
hitters Michelle Deehan (Upper Marlboro,
Md./Gwynn
Park) and Maggie
Borden (Hanover/Delone Catholic) have contributed 121 and 100 kills,
respectively.
Defensive
specialist Kelly Wengerter (Emerson,
N.J./Emerson) has 197 digs to her credit, while sophomore setter Allison
Furry (Guys Mills/Maplewood) averages 10.27 assists per game (852 assists)
and has also added 126 digs and 30 blocks.
Indiana
(Pa.): The Indiana (Pa.) University volleyball team is the defending PSAC Tournament champion,
entering as the third seed in this year’s playoffs with a 23-10 overall and
6-4 PSAC Western Division ledger. IUP’s
divisional losses came twice against top-seeded Edinboro (1-3, 1-3), once to
Lock Haven (0-3) and once against Clarion
University
(2-3).
The
Indiana
offense has three hitters who have recorded 300 or more kills, the trio headed
up by junior outside hitter Marcy
Stutzman. Stutzman has 471 kills, hitting at a .263 clip, and is second on
the squad with 241 digs and 32 service aces.
Freshman outside hitter Michelle
Jones has 353 kills (.241 attack pct.), while sophomore middle Brittany
Gates adds 320 kills (.336 attack pct.) in addition to a team-high of 125
blocks.
Other
hitters include sophomore middle Amy
Badorf who has 198 kills and is second to Gates with 110 blocks.
Another middle, Heather Bauer,
adds 139 kills and 98 blocks.
Junior
libero Sarah Rosenberry checks in
with a team high of 451 digs, and junior setter Lacey
George is among conference leaders with 1463 assists for an average of
12.40 per game.
Regular
Season
Split: Lock Haven defeated
Indiana
in three games in Thomas Fieldhouse earlier in the season, winning the set of
close games by scores of 30-28, 33-31 and 30-28.
In the most recent match-up,
Indiana
evened the score with a 3-2 victory, 34-32, 20-30, 30-24, 18-30, 15-13.
PSAC
Tournament: The winner of Tuesday’s quarterfinal match will advance to
the PSAC semifinals and will face
Kutztown
University, the Eastern Division’s top-seed on the road at Kutztown,
Pa., on Fri., Nov. 14. The West’s
top seed Edinboro University will face the winner of the Eastern Division
quarterfinal between West Chester University and Shippensburg University. The
PSAC Championship match is scheduled for Sat., Nov. 15, and will also be hosted
by Kutztown University.
