LHU's All-PSAC Selections (l-r): Marcus Burkley(WR), Rob Carey(DB/RS), Derrik Metz (LB) and Rafael Smith(WR)

(Lock Haven, Pa.) -  Four members of the Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania football team were awarded All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division honors as voted on by the league’s head coaches.  Bald Eagle gridders Marcus Burkley (Pittsburgh/Woodland Hills), Rob Carey (N. Braddock/Woodland Hills), Derrik Metz (Roaring Spring/Central) and Rafael Smith (Pittsburgh/Woodland Hills) were all among the conference’s best, earning a spot on either the First or Second All-PSAC teams.
Senior wide receiver Marcus Burkley earned his fourth-straight All-PSAC West honor and his third-consecutive selection as a First Team member.  Burkley set the Lock Haven career touchdowns reception mark this season, catching his fifth of the season in a home game versus Indiana ( Pa. ) to bring his four-year total to the new record of 19 touchdowns. He was fifth in the PSAC with 42 passes (4.67/gm) for an average of 58.4 yards a game with five scores. His biggest statistical game of the season came versus California ( Pa. ) University, scoring three touchdowns with a reception, a fumble recovery/return and a kickoff return.
Senior defensive back/return specialist Rob Carey receives his fourth-straight First Team All-PSAC West honor as a defensive back, and earned his third all-conference nod as a return specialist, receiving Second Team honors at that position.  Carey posted 59 tackles this season, splitting time between strong safety and cornerback.  He recorded a season-high of 10 stops against Shippensburg. On return duty, Carey averaged 5.6 yards on 12 punt returns and was fifth in the PSAC with a 23.5 yard-average on 23 kickoff returns. He posted a season kick return long of 62 yards versus Towson University and returned a punt for a season-high of 19 yards against Kutztown University .
Earning his second all-conference selection is senior middle linebacker Derrik Metz. Metz earns Second Team All-PSAC West honors after recording a team-best 91 tackles, good enough to place him seventh among the conference’s defenders. His 16 total tackles for loss ranks him first on the team and fourth in the PSAC.  On the season, Metz added two interceptions, two fumble recoveries and a forced fumble.
Freshman Rafael Smith makes his first appearance on the all-conference list as a Second Team All-PSAC West wide receiver. Smith made 31 catches for 444 yards and five touchdowns in his inaugural campaign.  Included in those totals were three games with a season-best five receptions and Smith also reeled in two passes for scores against Cheyney.  His five touchdowns tie him with Burkley for touchdowns receiving and rated him third on the team in overall scoring.
The Bald Eagle football team, under fourth-year head coach Mark Luther, closed out its 2003 campaign with a 3-7 overall and 1-5 PSAC Western Division record.
