(Lock
Haven, Pa.) - The Bald Eagle football team will honor
former gridiron great George "Big Train" Dintiman with a jersey
retirement ceremony prior to the start (*) of
the Homecoming game versus California (Pa.)
University on Sat., October 11. The Department of Athletics had retired jersey
number 23 following Dintiman's final season in 1957, and has chosen to honor
him again this weekend with a special presentation.
The only Lock Haven University football player
to have had his number retired, halfback Dintiman set and still owns the school
records in total career points (192) and career touchdowns (32) while playing
from 1955-57. He was the first ever Bald Eagle gridder to be selected in
the NFL draft, picked as a 27th round choice of the Baltimore Colts of the
National League. Dintiman would, however, eventually sign a contract with the
Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League.
While at Lock Haven, Dintiman was a three-time
All-State and two-time All-Conference halfback, earned Little All-American
honorable mention honors and a share of the state's scoring title in 1957 (12
TDs). He was also a member of the basketball team and captained the 1958
track and field team.
The Bald Eagles and California (Pa.)
are set for a 2 p.m. kickoff at Hubert Jack Stadium, with the ceremony
scheduled to take place prior to the start of the game.
*Previously scheduled for halftime, the
ceremony will now take place prior to the start of the game.
