THE LAST TIME VERSUS VERSUS SHIPPENSBURG
The Bald Eagles improved to 4-3 overall and earned their only win in the Western Division with a 26-13 decision over the visiting Red Raiders of Shippensburg University (4-3, 2-1 PSAC West).
The Haven was outmatched in the statistics but big plays carried the game. Lock Haven was up 19-6 by the half, and after a scoreless third quarter, both teams netted a final touchdown in the fourth quarter as the Bald Eagles maintained the edge.
Rob Carey earned a host of accolades for his performance, including Defensive Player of the Week honors from the PSAC West, D2Football.com and Don Hansen’s Football Gazette. Carey totaled 11 tackles, an interception and returned a fumble recovery after a near-SU score for a school-record 99 yards and the score. Running
back Maurice Walker scored twice on the ground to lead the offense, including one break for 46 yards.
Shippensburg’s Jarrod Dech scored on a four-yard run in the first quarter and John Kuhn added a two-yard scamper and 145 yards on the ground in total.
SCOUTING SHIPPENSBURG
The Shippensburg Red Raiders are 4-2 and 1-1 in the Western Division following last weekend’s 16-14 loss to Slippery Rock University. Slippery Rock had taken a 16-0 lead before the Raiders were able to tack points on the board, scoring twice but falling just short of the come-back.
Sophomore quarterback Rick Henshaw threw both touchdown passes last Saturday, connecting with receivers Tim Devanney and Patrick Ferguson. Henshaw is among conference passing leaders, averaging 159.7 yards a game. He is 71-for-137 with 10 touchdowns. His back-up is freshman Tony Gomez, who has seen limited time in three contests this season.
Patrick Ferguson (14 catches, 245 yds, 4 TDs) and Andre McLaurin (15 catches, 153 yds) have been Henshaw’s favorite targets, along with tight end Joel Gamble (12 catches, 127 yds, 2 TDs) and receiver Tim Devanney (9 catches, 167 yds., 1 TD).
Junior full back John Kuhn is second in the PSAC in all-purpose yardage with 736 of his 870 yards earned rushing. Averaging 122.7 yards per game, Kuhn has scored nine touchdowns via the run. Other notable players contributing to the ground game include half backs Matt Acri (28 att, 163 yds) and Andre McLaurin (53 att, 154 yds, 1 TD).

THE COACHES |
 |
Lock Haven is led by fourth-year mentor
Head Coach Mark Luther (Penn State, ‘92). The 2002 PSAC West Coach of the Year, Luther’s Bald Eagles went 4-7 last season -- the first four-win season since 1998. |
|
He owns a 10-23 overall mark in three seasons at the helm of the Lock Haven
gridders. Luther assumed the head role following five years of service as an LHU assistant from 1994-1998, acting as defensive coordinator, recruiting coordinator and administrative assistant to former head coach Nick Polk. |
|
 |
Fourteenth-year
Head Coach Rocky Rees (West Chester, ‘71) has built a75-68-1 overall record while at the helm of the Shippensburg program. Rees served five years at Susquehanna University prior to arriving in Shippensburg.

Three of five offensive linemen have at least two years of starting experience, juniors Josh Sands, at center, left tackle Greg Hutchinson and right guard Andrew Moses. Sophomore Jeb Keller is the predicted starter at left guard, while sophomore Chris Whittle is expected to man the right tackle slot.
On the opposite side of the ball, the Red Raiders front the conference’s stingiest defense, allowing only 260.5 yards per game. The Shippensburg rush defense rates second in the PSAC (98.5
ypg), while the pass defense is fifth (162.0 ypg).
Linebacker Dan Walsh is the Shippensburg tackles leader with 47 including eight for loss. He has also recorded three interceptions and two sacks. He is flanked by starting linebackers Chris Leonetti (42
TT, 6 TFL, 2.5 sacks, 1 INT) and Dave D’Andrea (16 TT, 4 TFL).
Up on the line, the Shippensburg defense relies on ends Gary Dunlap (18
TT, 4 TFL), a red-shirt freshman, and junior Ryan Hoffman (14 TT, 5 TFL, 2 sacks). Nose guard Yeboa Cobbold (17
TT, 5 TFL) and tackle Demetrius Roberts (13 TT, 5 TFL, 2.5 sacks) will also threaten the Bald Eagle offensive efforts.
Cornerback Brent Grimes, the 2002 PSAC West Rookie of the Year, owns 20 tackles, including three for loss, and a team best four interceptions and five break-ups. Junior Antonio Williams (25
TT, 3 TFL, 2 INT) mans the opposite cornerback position. The returning starter at strong safety, Clint Inch has 29 stops, while senior free safety John Andrews also adds 29 total tackles in addition to one interception.
The Raiders have been especially dangerous in return situations, clearing the path for the current PSAC kick return and punt return leader Brent Grimes. Grimes averages 18.2 yards on punt returns and 36.1 yards on kick returns including two for touchdown.
Sophomore punter Denver Brydon averages 36.9 yards a kick. Placekicker Ryan Rumberger is 14-for-18 on point after attempts and has attempted only one field goal all season, missing from a distance of 34 yards.
BALD EAGLE NOTES...
THE OFFENSE
The Bald Eagles generated only 192 yards of total offense including just 31 yards on the ground -- the only time LHU has been held to less than 100 yards rushing all season. But the efficiency of what yardage the Haven did cover was enough for the win including two scores through the air (Marcus Burkley and Adam Angelici) and a field goal (Danny Hagerman).
Marcus Burkley (Pittsburgh/Woodland Hills) tacked on an additional two touchdowns, scoring one on a 13-yard run following a fumble recovery and the other on a 60-yard lateral on a kickoff return.
Burkley, who totaled his first 100-yard game of the season with 110 yards receiving on four catches, is among PSAC leaders averaging 4.5 receptions per game. He has two touchdowns receiving this season, totaling 16 on his career and leaving him in need of three touchdowns for the all-time record.
Rafael Smith (Pittsburgh/Woodland Hills) has caught 14 passes, totaling 230 yards and a team-best four touchdowns. Senior
Adam Angelici (Bethel Park/Bethel Park) tallied his second touchdown receiving last Saturday on a five-yard catch. He has caught four passes for 69 yards and two scores. Tight end
Jason Walther (Elizabethtown/Elizabethtown) is also an option in the passing game, currently listing five catches for 63 yards and one touchdown.
Quarterback Brian Camberg (Altoona/Altoona) connected on seven-of-15 attempts versus California, throwing for 153 yards and two touchdowns. On the season, he owns a 48.1 completion percentage (26-of-54, 1 INT) and six touchdowns.
The Haven ground game struggled against California,
Maurice Walker (North Braddock/Woodland Hills) earning only 27 yards on 11 takes and
Justin Marshall (Luthersburg/DuBois) adding just 25 yards on 14 carries. Walker averages 61.7 yards per game with two scores, while Marshall adds 28.7 yards each time out.
Chelstan Anderson (Halifax/Halifax) puts up 39.3 yards a game and has crossed into the endzone on three occasions this season. Halfbacks
Josh Stadulis (Willow Grove/Academy of the New Church) (5.2 ypg) and Travis Diehl (Williamsport/Williamsport) (4.0 ypg) both also contribute to the offensive output.
Working to create the gaps for the Haven offense are center
Jason Scott (Linden/Williamsport), guards Eric Scaife (Philipsburg/Philipsburg-Osceola)
and Steve Szoboscan (Elizabethtown/Elizabethtown) and tackles Kevin Scheidler (Millersburg/Millersburg Area)
and Bill Cook (York/Central York).
THE DEFENSE
The Bald Eagle defense and special teams came up with several big plays to bring about the win over California, including two blocked punts by
Dustin Shaffer (Mayport/Redbank Valley) and a blocked field goal by Rob Carey (North Braddock/Woodland
Hills). Just as the Haven ground attack was stymied, Lock Haven also held California well under its normal rushing output of 139.4 yards, keeping the Vulcans to 85 yards total.
Linebacker Derrik Metz (Roaring Spring/Central) earned PSAC West Defensive Player of the Week and Honorable Mention honors from D2Football.com after logging a game high of 13 tackles, including four for loss. He had a forced fumble that led to an LHU field goal and made a solo stop in California’s final drive on fourth down to turn the ball back over to Lock Haven. Metz is among PSAC leaders with 51 total tackles and has a team-best nine tackles for loss and two interceptions.
Senior outside linebacker Dan Wissinger (Johnstown/Ferndale Area)
made another big stop in California’s final drive, sacking the Vulcan quarterback to back them up another 10 yards out of scoring distance. Wissinger is second on the squad with 32 tackles. Joining Metz and Wissinger in the starting lineup at linebacker is junior
Charles Cannon (Braddock Hills/Woodland Hills), who has 27 total stops including five for loss.
Lining up in the front are junior tackles
Jarrod Hendricks (Rockton/DuBois Area) (9 TT, 1 TFL) and Jason Kasheta (Carbondale/Carbondale Area) (6 TT, 2 TFL). Defensive end Dustin Shaffer (13 TT, 3 TFL) blocked two punts last week and had three tackles including one for a loss, earning the nod as the Jaycee Defensive Player of the Game. At the other end is senior
Devin O’Rourke (Montgomery/Montgomery) (17 TT, 4 TFL, 2 sacks), who came up big with six tackles and two sacks last Saturday.
Rob Carey registered seven tackles starting at strong safety versus California, and has 30 tackles on the season. The blocked field goal in the fourth quarter was his second in as many games. Starting free safety
Will Jones (McKeesport/McKeesport) had three tackles on Saturday, upping his season total to 16 stops. Other secondary members include cornerbacks
Matt Shealy (New Bethlehem/Redbank Valley) (4g, 7 TT, 1 INT) and Ngoyi Mukusa (Jim Thorpe/Jim Thorpe) (25 TT, 1 INT).
SPECIAL TEAMS
Rob Carey (21.2 ypr) and Marcus Burkley (28.8 ypr) share duties with Rafael Smith (17 ypr) in kickoff returns while Carey (5.0 ypr) handles punt returns.
True-freshman Danny Hagerman handles all the kicking duties, hitting a 35-yard field goal against California to bring his season total to seven with a long of 37 yards. He is 9-for-10 on point after attempts, and averages 33.3 yards per punt.
