THE LAST TIME VERSUS VERSUS KUTZTOWN
In their Hubert Jack Stadium opener, the 2002 Bald Eagles sent a stunned Kutztown team away with a 21-14 loss and opened up what would become a three-game home win streak.

It was Lock Haven’s stunning 21-point fourth quarter that would propel the Crimson and White to the victory after falling behind, 14-0, with 13 minutes remaining in the game. Kutztown’s Rob Flowers took the ball into the endzone from one yard out for the first score of the game early in the second quarter. In the Golden Bears first drive of the fourth quarter, Flowers hit Trevor Smith for the 15-yard touchdown reception, bringing KU’s lead to 14-0.

Rob Carey set the home team scoring in motion with a caused fumble which LHU recovered. Carey capped off that ensuing drive with a touchdown on his first career reception. Quarterback Tim Storino connected with Marcus Burkley for an 80-yard touchdown reception to bring LHU to within two points, 14-12. A bad snap on a Kutztown punt attempt resulted in a Lock Haven safety to tie up the game at 5:20 remaining. On LHU’s next drive, Storino’s pass met John Caldwell in the endzone, giving the Bald Eagles their first lead of the game at 21-14. An interception by Rob Carey on KU’s final possession closed the door on a come-back attempt, giving LHU its first win over Kutztown since the 1993 season.

SCOUTING KUTZTOWN
The Golden Bears won their third-straight game against a CIAA opponent to kick off the new season, defeating Virginia State University, 34-6, in Petersburg, Va. Kutztown posted 457 total yards, including 292 yards passing. Junior college transfer Jeremy Copeland was responsible for 286 of those yards, throwing for three touchdowns in his opening game with the Golden Bears.

Sophomore and 2002 PSAC East Rookie of the Year Stephen Gammage paced KU on the ground, scoring twice on 21 carries for a game-total of 66 yards. He was followed by sophomore running back Tony Bria, who took the ball on 18 attempts for 49 yards.

Receivers in Copeland’s radar include senior David Borden and junior Mike Conner along with junior Trevor Smith. Against Virginia State, Kutztown had two receivers post 100-yard games, including Conner who caught eight passes for 109 yards and a score. Smith came down with six receptions for 113 yards. Borden added four catches for 48 yards and a touchdown.

Kutztown’s probable starters at tight end will be red-shirt freshmen Jason Henley (1 rec., 5 yds) and Brian Long. The Bears’ front line is anchored by Pre-Season All-American Trevor Miller at center. Sophomores Don Keen and Charlie Kehs flank center, while sophomore Eric Newill and senior Brent Miller will man the tackle slots.

Defensively, Kutztown held Virginia State to just 139 yards rushing and 102 yards passing. Middle linebacker Greg Mitchell led KU with seven tackles including one for loss. Fellow linebackers Ted Kinyon (4 tkl) and Drew Hicks (5 tkls) added support.

THE COACHES

Lock Haven is led by fourth-year mentor Head Coach Mark Luther (Penn State, ‘92). The 2002 PSAC West Coach of the Year, Luther’s Bald Eagles went 4-7 last season -- the first four-win season since 1998.
He owns a 10-23 overall mark in three seasons at the helm of the Lock Haven gridders. Luther assumed the head role following five years of service as an LHU assistant from 1994-1998, acting as defensive coordinator, recruiting coordinator and administrative assistant to former head coach Nick Polk.
Kutztown Head Coach Dave Keeny (Kutztown, ‘83, ‘87) is in his sixth season at the helm of the Golden Bear football team. Keeny led last year’s squad to a 4-7 record, and has gone 26-26 over his five years as head coach.
Prior to taking the head coaching position, he served as KU’s offensive coordinator for five seasons. Previous coaching jobs include a three-year stint at Thomas More College.

Up front, Kutztown utilizes sophomore tackles Adam Ogorek and Brent Hudson and a pair of senior ends in Tim Krusen and Matt Sola.

Secondary starters include corners Barren Grier, a red-shirt freshman, and senior Andre Davis, a two-time All-PSAC East pick. Strong safety Matt Millard, who had six tackles against Virginia State, and free safety Michael Baldwin, who added five stops, will also be in the mix.

Kick and punt returns fall in the realm of duties of Andre Davis, who could receive help from Tony Bria on punt returns and James Brooks for kick returns. Two-time all-conference punter Jon Corson is back for his final year, averaging 40.5 yards on two punts versus Virginia State. Handling the team’s kicking is Matt Scartozzi, who went 4-for-5 on point after attempts last Saturday.

BALD EAGLE NOTES...

THE OFFENSE
The Haven offense found the Towson defense a steep challenge, committing three costly turnovers and finding it hard to move the ball against the stingy defenders. Still, the 19 points put up by the Bald Eagles was the most against a Division I-AA squad since 1996 and only twice last season did LHU output more than 300 yards of total offense like the 302 yards covered versus the Tigers.

Running backs Maurice Walker (North Braddock/Woodland Hills) and Chelstan Anderson (Halifax/Halifax) both scored touchdowns in the opening contest, Walker registering the first of the season on a one-yard pickup while Anderson broke free for a 30-yard rush into paydirt later in the game. Walker led LHU with 53 yards on 14 attempts, Anderson had 43 yards on six carries and Justin Marshall (Luthersburg/DuBois) added 10 yards on three takes.

Halfbacks Josh Stadulis (Willow Grove/Academy of the New Church) (1 att., 0 yd) and Travis Diehl (Williamsport/Williamsport) (1 recep., 14yds) will both look to add more depth to the offensive attack this week.

Red-shirt freshman Troy Wile (Fayetteville/Chambersburg Area) experienced a harsh introduction to his on-field career, getting sacked in the endzone on his first play from scrimmage (at the LHU-2 yardline). Still, Wile bounced back and completed 9-of-14 passes for 96 yards and could earn the starting role this weekend. Another red-shirt, Brian Camberg (Altoona/Altoona), entered in the fourth quarter and connected on five of six tries including a 42-yard touchdown pass to Adam Angelici (Bethel Park/Bethel Park). Senior Tim Storino (Pittsburgh/Bethel Park) went just 1-for-7, and will have to battle back with a solid week of workouts to hold off the challengers for the starting role.

Anxiously awaiting to see who they’ll be taking their cues from is a talented group of receivers. Red-shirt freshman Rafael Smith (Pittsburgh/Woodland Hills) (5 receptions/57 yds) and senior Marcus Burkley (Pittsburgh/Woodland Hills) (3 receptions/30 yds) led the way in number of catches, while senior Adam Angelici made good on his only reception of the game with the 42-yard touchdown. Scott Anderson (Cortland, Ohio/Lakeview) logged the start against Towson and will be another receiver to watch this weekend at Kutztown.

Starting tight end Jason Walther (Elizabethtown/Elizabethtown) picked up one pass at Towson, going 11 yards. He will be backed up by freshman Nate Compton (Wellsboro/Wellsboro).

The offensive line continues to utilize the talents of center Jason Scott (Linden/Williamsport), guards Bob Koger (Coraopolis/Montour) and Steve Szoboscan (Elizabethtown/Elizabethtown) and tackles Kevin Scheidler (Millersburg/Millersburg Area) and Bill Cook (York/Central York)

THE DEFENSE
On the field for 37 minutes of play, the most time logged by any defense in the conference this past week, the Haven defenders got a workout last Saturday but showed signs of another promising season. The Bald Eagle defenders came up with two successful stands inside their own 10-yardline, causing a fumble on one and a turnover on downs on the other.

Linebackers Dan Wissinger (Johnstown/Ferndale Area) (11 tkls) and Charles Cannon (Braddock Hills/Woodland Hills) (10 tkls) led LHU in total stops, Cannon adding three behind the line of scrimmage. Rounding out the starting crew, Derrik Metz (Roaring Spring/Central) posted eight stops.

The front line will consist of mainstays Jarrod Hendricks (Rockton/DuBois Area) and Jason Kasheta (Carbondale/Carbondale Area) at tackle while Nathan Eck (Jersey Shore/Jersey Shore) and Dustin Shaffer (Mayport/Redbank Valley) resume control at both end positions.

Cornerback Ngoyi Mukusa (Jim Thorpe/Jim Thorpe) was third on the list of Haven tacklers, recording a team-high of seven solo tackles and an overall total of nine stops. Rob Carey (North Braddock/Woodland Hills) added five tackles from his left corner position.

Strong safety Winston Alspaugh (Carlisle/Boiling Springs) had six tackles and a pass break-up against Towson. Free safety John Scullin (Boiling Springs/Boiling Springs) also registered six tackles last weekend.

SPECIAL TEAMS
Bald Eagle return specialists Rob Carey and Marcus Burkley both had solid outings -- Carey had three kick returns for 89 yards and Burkley fielded two for 57 yards. Carey’s performance included a 62-yard pickup and Burkley’s a long of 42 yards.

Freshman Dan Hagerman (Scottdale/Southmoreland) will again handle punting and kicking duties. Hagerman averaged 34.6 yards on seven punts versus Towson and went 1-for-1 on point after attempts. His first field goal attempt of the season came from 40 yards out, faling just short. Freshman Jack Kephart (Houtzdale/Moshannon Valley) is available to punt if needed, and Jonathan Fleming (Ridgway/Ridgway Area) can take over as placekicker when necessary.
