University Golden Bears, who also stand at
1-1 entering into the weekend. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m.

THE SERIES
Lock Haven holds a 14-9-1 advantage over the Golden Bears in a series dating
back to 1930 when the Bald Eagles escaped with a 13-12 victory. Kutztown has
the edge in recent match-ups, winning six of the last seven including last
season’s 7-3 defensive struggle.

THE LAST TIME VERSUS
KUTZTOWN
Kutztown claimed a 7-3 victory in 2003 on University Field, emerging
from the defensive battle with the win over the Bald Eagles. Lock Haven had
outgained the Golden Bears, 236-201, but gave up 15 hits behind the line of
scrimmage and turned the ball over twice on fumbles in less than ideal,
slippery field conditions.
Following a scoreless tie through
the first quarter, Kutztown broke the drought with a 10-yard touchdown pass
from Jeremy Copeland to Mike Conner in the middle of the second period.
With just one second remaining on
the game clock in the first half, Dan Hagerman capped off a Lock Haven drive
with a 37-yard field goal to shorten the gap and send the Bald Eagles into
intermission down by a 3-7 score.
Neither team advanced the ball
past midfield in the third quarter, and in the fourth, a promisng Haven drive
into KU territory late in the fourth quarter was ultimately thwarted by the
Golden Bear defense as the clock expired.
Maurice Walker recorded 99 yards
on the ground to pace the LHU offense. Linebackers Derek Metz and Charles
Cannon were tops on the defensive list, Metz posting eight tackles and an
interception while Cannon added five tackles and a fumble recovery.
Kutztown’s Tony Bria totaled 93 yards on the rush, while quarterback Copeland
had 10 completions for 85 yards including the deciding touchdown. The Bear
defense pounded LHU for a total of 15 stops behind the line of scrimmage,
including five by Tim Krusen. Greg Mitchell was the game leader with 11
tackles.
SCOUTING KUTZTOWN
The Golden Bears, now 1-1 overall, are coming off a 25-14 victory over
Clarion University. The Kutztown defense helped guarantee that win, as three of
the four touchdowns came from defensive plays including a blocked punt,
interception return and fumble return.
The linebacker duo of junior Drew
Hicks and senior Yusef Turner came up big in the Golden Bears’ win over
Clarion. Turner was named PSAC East Defensive Player of the Week after totaling
12 tackles, including three for loss and two sacks, a pass breakup, a blocked
punt, a fumble recovery and touchdown. Hicks, who leads KU with 19 tackles,
boosted his statistics with a 14-tackle performance versus Clarion. The third
linebacker, junior Greg Mitchell, was a second team All-PSAC pick last season
and has seven hits so far.
Up on the line, sophomore end Mike
Grosso is third among Kutztown defenders with 12 tackles.
Free safety Michael Baldwin and
cornerback Justin Gibbs have also been key players in the Golden Bear defense.
Baldwin has eight tackles this season and was responsible for one touchdown
versus Clarion, an interception and 65-yard return for score. Gibbs has also
come up with eight stops over the two games, and is the team leader with four
pass breakups.
Offensively, Kutztown benefits
from the senior leadership of quarterback Jeremy Copeland. Copeland has thrown
for 256 yards this season, connecting on 30 of 62 attempts. His targets
include sophomore James Brooks (8 catches, 97 yds) and senior Trevor Smith (4
catches, 30 yds). |

THE COACHES |
 |
Lock Haven Head Coach Mark
Luther (Penn State, ‘92) is in his fifth season with the Bald
Eagle program. The 2002 PSAC Western Division Coach of the Year,
Luther continues to create a more competitive product with his
teams challenging the top conference and regional programs on a
regular basis. |
| Just last season, the
Bald Eagles’ wins included one over Bloomsburg University, the
2003 runner-up and 2004 pre-season favorite in the Eastern
Division. He currently owns a 13-31 overall mark at Lock Haven.
Luther assumed the head role at LHU following five years as an
assistant with the Bald Eagles from 1994-1998, acting as defensive
coordinator, recruiting coordinator and administrative assistant
to former head coach Nick Polk. |
|
 |
Kutztown’s Dave Keeny (Kutztown, ‘83) enters his
seventh season as the head coach at his alma mater. He owns the
best career winning percentage among Kutztown head football
coaches and is already third on the KU career coaching victories
chart with his record of 32-31. |
|
Prior to assuming
the role as head coach, Keeny was KU’s offensive coordinator for
five seasons. Before returning to Kutztown, he was offensive
coordinator at Thomas More College for three season. He also
served assistant coaching stints at Arizona, Virginia and Morehead
State. |

The one offensive touchdown the Golden
Bears have scored came on the ground compliments of junior running back Tony
Bria. Bria, who was a second team All-PSAC player a year ago, leads current
Kutztown rushers, averaging 67.0 yards on 17 attempts per outing. Junior
fullback Stephen Gammage has also gotten a number of handoffs in the early
season, averaging 34.5 yards over the first two contests.
Junior kicker Matt Scartozzi is
1-of-3 in point-after attempts, and has gotten on the field just once to
attempt a field goal, missing from 36 yards out. Junior George Radu has been
handling punting duties, averaging 36.7 yards per punt.
Bria and Brooks are deep for kick
returns, Bria averaging (6/106 yds) 17.7 yards while Brooks (3/61 yds) has
covered 20.3 yards per return. Bria is also the top choice for punt returns,
averaging 4.5 yards per return.
BALD EAGLE NOTES...
THE OFFENSE
Battered by 10 tackles behind the line of scrimmage including three
sacks, the Haven offense turned to its passing game last Saturday versus James
Madison. In the air, the Bald Eagles found more space in which to operate and
covered 160 yards over the game. Starting quarterback Troy Wile
(Fayetteville/Chambersburg) was forced to exit the game with an ankle
injury in the midst of the Haven’s only scoring drive of the game, leaving
backup Brian Camberg (Altoona/Altoona) to finish off the series. Camberg
threw a 55-yard connection to Sean Sanderson (Enola/East Pennsboro) on
his first snap and eventually capped off the drive with a nine-yard touchdown
pass to Rafael Smith (Pittsburgh/Woodland Hills).
Camberg is now 12-of-21 on the season for 185 yards and one touchdown.
Smith, who has scored on
three of his four receptions this season, averages 30 yards per game and leads
LHU scoring with the three touchdown catches. Red-shirt freshman Adam
Lawrence (Hanover/Delone Catholic) has played his way into the starting
lineup after catching five passes for 63 yards versus James Madison.
Senior running back
Maurice Walker (N. Braddock/Woodland Hills) has been the main cog in the
Haven’s ground attack, posting a two-game total of 201 yards and two
touchdowns. Steadily climbing in the school record books with 2,059 career
rushing yards, he needs just 10 more to move into fourth place overall. He
already owns fourth-place in career rushing attempts (496) and is tied for
ninth in career touchdowns with 13 so far. Justin Marshall (Luthersburg/DuBois)
and Derek Marshall (Luthersburg/DuBois) have taken the ball on
several occasions, Justin averaging 29 yards a game while Derek has accounted
for 14 yards per outing.
Probable starters up on the
line include junior center Jason Scott (Linden/Williamsport) along with
guards Jarrod Hendricks (Rockton/DuBois Area) and Adam Lanzendorfer
(Martinsburg/Central). Eric Scaife (Philipsburg/Philipsburg-Osceola) and
Matt Coxford (Middlebury Center/Wellsboro) claim the pair of offensive
tackle positions, while junior Kevin Scheidler (Millersburg/Millersburg
Area) is the probable starter at tight end.
THE DEFENSE
While the Bald Eagle defense gave up more yardage to the Division I-AA
James Madison offense than it hopefully will to any Division II team this
season, Lock Haven was still able to record four tackles for loss, including
one sack, one interception and three other passes defended.
Red-shirt freshman and
strong safety David Show (Mill Run/Connellsville Area) came up with his
first career interception last Saturday and ran it back 40 yards. Show
currently leads Haven defenders and is third in the PSAC with 20 stops,
including 11 solo hits. Senior free safety Will Jones
(McKeesport/McKeesport) is right behind with 19 tackles and also has one
interception on his stat sheet.
Cornerbacks Michael
Nesby (Rankin/Woodland Hills) and Matt Shealy (New Bethlehem/Redbank
Valley) remain at the top of the depth chart again this week. Nesby had
three tackles against James Madison while Shealy also posted three stops.
Linebacker Jon Nalewak
(Shamokin/Shamokin Area), who entered the game as a backup at one of the
outside slots, ended up the game leader with 12 tackles and one pass breakup.
Joining Nalewak (15 TT) on the depth chart at linebacker are senior middle
linebacker Brian Lumpkin (Rockville, Md./Bullis School) and sophomore
outside linebacker Michael Slatcoff (Sandy Lake/Cochranton). Slatcoff
had seven stops versus the Dukes and is fourth among Haven defenders with 12
total including 1.5 for loss. Lumpkin added five tackles last weekend and is
fifth on the LHU list with 11 tackles over the two-game span.
Defensive end Brad Sones
(Elysburg/Southern Columbia) (6 TT, 2 TFL) came up with three tackles
including a sack for a loss of seven yards against the James Madison offense.
The rest of the line will include John Smeltzer (Red Lion/Red Lion) (3
TT, 2 TFL) on the opposite end along with Warren Whitaker (Wilkes-Barre/GAR
Memorial) (7 TT, 2 TFL) and Brian Johnson (St. Marys/St. Marys Area)
(9 TT, 0.5 TFL) at right and left tackle.
SPECIAL TEAMS
Placekicker and punter Dan Hagerman (Scottdale/Southmoreland) was
on the field 10 times to punt last weekend, bringing his average to 35.1 yards
per punt and ranking the sophomore seventh in the PSAC in the category. As a
placekicker, he is 6-for-6 on point after kicks and 0-for-2 in field goal
attempts (37, 47 yds).
Maurice Walker ranks
ninth in the conference in kick return average, putting up 18.2 yards per
return. Rafael Smith, the starting punt returner, currently averages 3.0 yards
per return.
