NEWPORT
NEWS, Va. –
Strong pitching and taking advantage of the opponent’s
defensive mistakes led to a pair of Lock
Haven University
baseball (2-0) victories today at the Builder
Invitational. LHU shut-out Bloomsburg University (0-2) 5-0
before upending East
Stroudsburg
University (0-2) 7-4 on opening day for the Bald Eagles.
Sophomore ace Jason
Brindle (Huntingdon,
Pa./Huntingdon Area)
didn’t disappoint today,
hurling 6.1 innings of three-hit ball, sharing the shutout
with sophomore Ian Whinnery (Towanda,
Pa/Towanda).
Senior
catcher Chris Miller (Tyrone, Pa/Bellwood-Antis)
walked and scored on a fielder’s choice in the second for
the 1-0 lead. A two-RBI single by junior Neil Herman
(Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville) broke the game open in
the fifth. LHU tacked on two more runs in the top of the
seventh to dash any Bloomsburg hopes at a comeback.
In game two, the Bald
Eagles fell behind early, giving up four runs in the first
three innings to fall behind 4-1. LHU would answer with
four runs in the top of the fourth to take the lead for
good.
After a
walk to Travis Ruane (Hughesville, Pa./Hughesville)
and a double by Derek Houtz (Centre Hall, Pa./Penns
Valley), Ruane would score on a wild pitch. Brett
Kelley (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport) would plate
Houtz with a single to left field before scoring himself
as the next play produced two errors.
Freshman Shane Hanna (Holland,
Pa./Council Rock South)
would cap the inning by scoring on another Warrior error,
bringing the tally to 5-4.
After struggling early, freshman pitcher
Patrick Young (Allensville, Pa./Indian Valley) picked
up a win in his first start, going 5.2 innings with eight
strikeouts.
LHU would
put the game out of reach with two more runs in the sixth,
as Kelley and Herman would score on a wild pitch and an
Aaron Neideigh (Spring Mills, Pa./Penns Valley)
single.
This
marks the second-straight season that the Bald Eagles open
up 2-0. LHU downed St. Paul’s College twice on opening day
in 2004.
Brindle,
Whinnery, Miller, Herman, Ruane, Houtz, Kelley, Hanna,
Young, Neideigh and the rest of
the Bald Eagles are back in action Saturday, Feb. 26, at
11:30 a.m. as they face Kutztown University. |
