Baseball Splits Again at Gene Cusick Collegiate Classic, 12-7, 3-2

FT. MYERS, Fla. – The Lock Haven University baseball team (7-5) out-hit the University of New Haven to a 12-7 win before getting burned by the long ball in a 3-2 loss to Regis University (15-7) today (March 11) at the Gene Cusick Collegiate Classic. LHU has gone 5-2 so far in this tournament.

Against UNH, the Chargers held a commanding 6-1 lead after four innings. LHU would break out with six runs in the fifth, getting two more in the sixth and three in the seventh for the 12-7 final tally.

Senior shortstop Brett Kelley (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport) smacked his first home run of the season, a three-run shot. Sophomore catcher Travis Ruane (Hughesville, Pa./Shippensburg Univ.) drove in three with a 2-for-5 effort, while Aaron Neideigh (Spring Mills, Pa./Penns Valley) and Dave Miller (Tyrone, Pa./Bellwood-Antis) both plated two runs.

Sophomore Ian M. Whinnery (Towanda, Pa/Towanda) picked up his first win of the season (1-0) with 2.1 innings of relief, while senior Andy Leakey (State College, Pa/State College) got the final five outs for his second save of the year.

Regis took the Bald Eagles by a 3-2 tally, scoring all three runs on home runs, “just fly balls that got caught in a strong wind,” revealed LHU assistant coach Heath Stover.

LHU’s Blake Barbini (Pittston, Pa./Pittston Area) was the hard-luck loser today, falling to 1-2 with seven innings of eight-strikeout ball. Craig Deaver was the winning pitcher for the Rangers.

Senior third baseman Derek Megargell (Orangeville, Pa./Alleghany College(Md.)) finished 2-for-3 with an RBI, Miller added a double and senior Kyle Elbin (Bedford, Pa./Delgado C.C.) brought home the other LHU run with a sacrifice fly.

Kelley, Ruane, Neideigh, Miller, Whinnery, Leakey, Stover, Barbini, Megargell, Elbin and the rest of the Bald Eagles are back in action Saturday, March 12 at 9 a.m. against the College of St. Rose.
