Runs Aplenty as LHU Earns Split at Mansfield, 10-9, 13-8

MANSFIELD, Pa. – Runs were easy to come by today (March 31) at Shaute Field, as the Lock Haven University baseball team (10-9) picked up a split against Mansfield University, 10-9, 13-8. The Bald Eagles used a 10-run sixth inning to get the win in game one.

The Mountaineers held a commanding 7-0 lead heading into the sixth, but the Bald Eagle bats ignited for six consecutive hits and all of their 10 runs in the game to jump out in front.

Junior leftfielder Aaron Neideigh (Spring Mills, Pa./Penns Valley) smacked a grand slam, while sophomore designated hitter Blake Barbini (Pittston, Pa./Pittston Area) got a three-run shot and a double in the inning. Junior centerfielder Kyle Elbin (Bedford, Pa./Delgado C.C.) finished 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored.

The Mountaineers nearly forced extra innings, as they got their first two runners on and cut the LHU lead to 10-9 with two out. Senior reliever Kenny Janiszewski (Tunkhannock, Pa./Tunkhannock) got the last batter to pop out to second for the win.

Sophomore Kyle Wentz (Schuylkill Haven, Pa./Blue Mtn) went five innings, giving up five earned runs and striking out two, evening out to 1-1 on the season.

Mansfield first baseman D.J. Hoshauer hit three home runs. Reliever Ryan Mantua (0-2) went 1.2 innings in the loss.

Game two ended early on account of darkness, with Mansfield earning the win 13-8. Mansfield hit two more home runs in game two, including a grand slam of their own.

After a sacrifice fly and a Derek Megargell (Orangeville, Pa./Alleghany College(Md.)) single brought home two runs in the third, the Mountaineers answered with six runs, four coming on a grand slam by Colby Rickabaugh.

LHU followed up with two home runs in the fourth, a leadoff shot by Neideigh and a two-run jack by sophomore designated hitter Travis Ruane (Hughesville, Pa./Hughesville), cutting the lead to 6-5.

Mansfield would spread their final seven runs over the next three innings to put the game out of reach. Neideigh finished game two at 2-for-3 with three runs scored and an RBI, while Ruane had a 3-for-4 nightcap with three RBI and a run scored.

Senior Mike Frederick (Williamsport, Pa/S. Williamsport) picked up the loss in going just 1.1 innings as the starter, falling to 0-1. Mansfield’s Justin Ferguson (1-1) grabbed the win with a complete-game effort.

Neideigh, Barbini, Elbin, Janiszewski, Wentz, Megargell, Ruane, Frederick and the rest of the Bald Eagles are back in action Friday, April 1 at 1 p.m. as they travel to Clarion University.
