Baseball’s Late Rally Earns First PSAC West Win

CLARION, Pa. – Sophomore Blake Barbini (Pittston, Pa./Pittston Area) got the win as pitcher and went 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored, powering the Lock Haven University baseball team (11-10, 1-1 PSAC West) to their first Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West win in a double-header split, 9-4, 5-2 at Clarion University (10-9-1, 2-2 PSAC West) today (April 1).

In game one, the Bald Eagles answered one rally, but not a second. Down 3-2 after three, LHU plated two runs in the fourth. After a leadoff double by senior shortstop Brett Kelley (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport), he came around to score on a throwing error on the next play. Senior designated hitter Chris Miller (Tyrone, Pa/Bellwood-Antis) plated the second run with a single, putting Lock Haven ahead 4-3.

The Golden Eagles would then mount five unanswered runs to win the first game 9-4. Junior Bryan Stamm (Mifflinburg, Pa./Temple University) took the loss in a five-inning effort, falling to 2-2. Clarion’s Bill Young (2-0) picked up the win.

In game two, Barbini scored a run in the sixth and drove home another with a double in the seventh to ignite a four-run rally that gave the Bald Eagles a 5-2 win.

Barbini entered in relief from his designated-hitter role, pitching the fifth inning to get the win, improving to 2-2. Senior Andy Leakey (State College, Pa/State College) went two innings to get his third save. Clarion’s Josh Gerstel drops to 3-2 after today’s loss.

Barbini, Kelley, Miller, Stamm, Leakey and the rest of the Lady Eagles are back in action tomorrow, April 2, at 1 p.m. as they host Clarion.
