Lock Haven Drops Pair at Bloomsburg, 13-7, 6-4

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – Seven different Bald Eagles drove in runs, but it wasn’t enough, as the Lock Haven University baseball team (7-13, 2-6 PSAC West) dropped a pair of games today (April 12) at Bloomsburg University (10-10, 1-7 PSAC East) 13-7 and 6-4.

Game one featured runs in bunches, as the Bald Eagles found themselves down 9-1 after two innings. LHU picked up three runs in the third, two of which coming on a single by sophomore catcher Travis Ruane (Hughesville, Pa./Hughesville).

LHU tacked on another run in the fourth when junior Aaron Neideigh (Spring Mills, Pa./Penns Valley) knocked home classmate Kurt Elbin (Bedford, Pa./Delgado C.C.) with a single. The Husky bats responded with four in the fifth to put the game out of reach. The Bald Eagles made an effort in the seventh, with a pair of RBI doubles by junior Kyle Elbin (Bedford, Pa./Delgado C.C.) and senior Dave Miller (Tyrone, Pa/Bellwood-Antis), but the rally would fall short.

Sophomore righthander Ian M. Whinnery (Towanda, Pa/Towanda) lasted one inning in the loss, his first decision of the year. Bloomsburg starter Jeff Withelder (2-0) went four innings to get the win.

Game two was a bit closer matchup, as LHU took the early lead this time with a pair of runs in the first. With two out, Blake Barbini (Pittston, Pa./Pittston Area) singled, followed by a walk. Senior first baseman Chris Miller (Tyrone, Pa/Bellwood-Antis) brought home both runs with his third double of the year.

Bloomsburg would waste no time finding an answer, however, as they would post six unanswered runs over the next three innings.

Neideigh’s pinch-hit home run followed by a pair of doubles from senior Brett Kelley (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport) and Kurt Elbin would bring LHU within two in the sixth, but the two-out rally would end there as Bloomsburg would get the 6-4 win.

Sophomore starter Kyle Wentz (Schuylkill Haven, Pa./Blue Mtn) went five innings, fanning five and allowing just three earned runs to fall to 1-1, while Bloomsburg’s Mike Akers (2-0) picked up the complete-game win.

Barbini, Ruane, Neideigh, Elbin, Elbin, Miller, Whinnery, Miller, Kelley, Wentz and the rest of the Bald Eagles are back in action Friday, April 15 at 1 p.m. as they play host to California University (Pa.).
