The Lady Eagles of Lock Haven University defeated Shippensburg University, 3-2, to advance to the PSAC Tournament Championship.  Two-time defending champion Lock Haven will take on Bloomsburg University for the title on Saturday, Nov. 2, at 1 p.m.

Three goals early in the second half were enough to survive a late push by the Lady Raiders following a scoreless tie entering into the final stanza.  Most of the first half was spent with Shippensburg on the offensive but the action started to settle more towards midfield by the close.  It was Lock Haven who came out of intermission with the momentum, as the Lady Eagles used their penalty corner chances to break the tie, scoring first in the 45th minute on its first corner attempt of the half.  The ball traveled to the top of the arc and Janelle Ebaugh (Hanover/Littlestown) passed it back down to Jen DeNault (Hamburg/Hamburg) who sliced it in from the bottom corner.  Three minutes later, The Haven went for a similar penalty corner set-up and knocked the ball around the arc and back down to DeNault, who finished off the play for the 2-0 LHU lead.  In the 56th minute, Nikki Sweger (Dauphin/Central Dauphin East) got her stick on a ball being batted around in front of the cage and knocked it into the back right corner for the three-goal advantage.

As time ticked off the clock, Shippensburg went on a run as Anne Furman (Sunbury/Line Mountain) scored twice in the final three minutes off assists from Kim Foulke (Willow Grove/Upper Moreland) and Toni Held (Slatington/N.Western Lehigh), including one indirectly off of action resulting from a penalty corner.  The goals came too late, however, as the Lady Eagles’ lead stuck for the final 3-2 victory.

In goal, Lock Haven’s Melissa Stubblefield (Carmel, N.Y./Carmel) came up big by turning away seven Raider shots on goal including five in the first half.  Shippensburg’s Nora Luchansky (Whitehall/Whitehall) turned away two Haven attempts on goal, while Samantha Moll (West Lawn/Wilson) posted two saves with the three goals allowed.

Lock Haven advances to the 2002 PSAC Tournament Championship on Sat., Nov. 2, to be held in Bloomsburg, Pa., at 1 p.m.  In the other semifinal round contest, top-seeded Bloomsburg University defeated No. 4-seed East Stroudsburg University, 2-1.

The Haven took the lead on its first penalty corner attempt, scoring straight away on the set play with a goal by Janelle Ebaugh (Hanover/Littlestown) off assists from Jen DeNault (Hamburg/Hamburg) and Katie Stewartz (Boyertown/Boyertown).  Eight minutes later, Erika Grap came up with the ball at midfield and escorted it towards the goal on a break-away, sliding one past the keeper to give LHU the 2-0 lead.

A goal by Assumption in the 30th minute brought the margin back down to one goal.  The Hounds’ Kelly Sullivan sent the ball into the circle from the top of the arc and Lindsey Stone was able to get a touch on the ball before it careened through to the back of the cage for their only score.

Lock Haven pushed the lead back up to two goals just before the close of the first half as another one-on-one situation developed for LHU’s Erika Grap.  Grap weaved down field then took on the keeper, pushing the ball right then into the cage for her second goal of the day.  Nikki Sweger (Dauphin/Central Dauphin East) wrapped up Lady Eagle scoring with a goal in the second half off an assist from Kellie Kulina (Hummelstown/Lower Dauphin).

LHU’s keepers Melissa Stubblefield (Carmel, N.Y./Carmel) and Megan Barclay (Pompton Plains, N.J./Pequannock) shared time in goal, while Assumption’s Kristyn Bonnyman went the distance with 12 saves.

Sophomore midfielder Kellie Kulina (Hummelstown/Lower Dauphin) added the offensive highlights to help lift Lock Haven to the win, scoring one goal while assisting on three others.

It took almost 21 minutes for either team to score, the Lady Eagles breaking the scoreless tie with a goal by Courtney Hughes(Schwenksville/Souderton) from Kulina off a penalty corner to give LHU the 1-0 lead at intermission.  Both teams stepped up the pace in the second half, pushing the limits on both ends of the field.  The Haven’s attack proved more efficient, however, hitting paydirt three times within the first 10 minutes.  Kulina sent a cross in from the edge of the circle to Nikki Sweger (Dauphin/Central Dauphin East), who slapped the ball into the goal just 1:27 into the second stanza.  In the 40th minute, Kulina sent the ball past the Mercyhurst keeper following a scramble in front of the cage for an unassisted goal of her own.  Jen DeNault (Hamburg/Hamburg) chipped the ball into the bottom corner of the cage off a penalty corner play assisted by Kulina in the 44th minute.

The Lady Lakers tallied their only goal of the contest well into the second half, as Nicole Davis skipped a ball past LHU’s keeper from in front of the cage.  The Haven’s Lauren Kelchner (Brodheadsville/Pleasant Valley) wrapped up scoring with an unassisted goal in the 57th minute of action.

Two goals inside the first 10 minutes of play would be all LHU needed, but the Lady Eagles tacked on an additional six scores while out-shooting Kutztown by a margin of 24-4.  Sara Segerlin (Penfield, N.Y./Webster) struck first with a shot on the run from the top left of the circle, and Kellie Kulina (Hummelstown/Lower Dauphin) added the second after receiving the pass into the circle from Nikki Sweger (Dauphin/Central Dauphin East).  Erika Grap scored two of her three in the first half, taking the ball herself on a break-away for her first and then receiving an assist from Kulina for her second.  Before the half was up, The Haven connected on a penalty corner attempt with Janelle Ebaugh (Hanover/Littlestown) hitting the back of the cage off assists from Jen DeNault (Hamburg/Hamburg) and Katie Stewartz (Boyertown/Boyertown).

Lock Haven University took on Division I Central Michigan University this afternoon, with the Chippewas emerging the 6-2 victors.

Despite heavy action around the Central Michigan goal in the second half and virtually even shot numbers (LHU-20/CMU-19), Lock Haven was unable to better the efficiency of its rivals, who had three players score two goals each. The Chippewas scored three times within the first 11 minutes to take an early advantage. Kristy Reed scored her two goals first, crossing the ball past the keeper into the back left corner of the cage at 3:20, then netting a goal off a set penalty corner play. Jocelyn Gates also scored twice in the first half, including one in a scramble in front of the cage where she got her stick on the ball and slid it underneath the outstretched leg of Haven keeper Melissa Stubblefield (Carmel, N.Y./Carmel). Central Michigan’s Meg Lewis wrapped up scoring for the visitors, pocketing a pair in the second half to give CMU the comfortable 6-2 lead and eventual victory.

Lock Haven got one goal in the first half, a score by Janelle Ebaugh (Hanover/Littlestown) off a penalty corner with assists from Katie Stewartz (Boyertown/Boyertown) and Jen DeNault (Hamburg/Hamburg). Another scoring chance came for LHU late in the first half, but Ebaugh’s penalty stroke was stopped by CMU’s Janel Spero. The first goal of the second half came from the Haven’s Kellie Kulina (Hummelstown/Lower Dauphin), who also converted a penalty corner attempt with the assist from Stewartz.

Lock Haven (1-1) next faces Ithaca College on Sept. 7 at 1 p.m.
