(Lock Haven, Pa.) - Three goals and an assist by Nikki Sweger (Dauphin/Central Dauphin East) made the difference as the Lock Haven field hockey team (1-0) captured a  4-1 win over Towson University (0-1) in its first game back in NCAA Division I competition.
It was Towson who struck paydirt first, however, as Ashley Bacon took advantage of a scramble in front of the net and sent a rebound off the keeper’s pads into the back of the cage just 1:37 into the contest.
Sweger’s first goal set the score back at even in the 11th minute, driving a hard shot through the defense and into the cage. The junior forward would strike again in the 23rd minute, taking a quick pass from Rebecca Steffen (Hawley/Wallenpaupack) and chipping it through. Just two minutes later, Sweger would capitalize on a cross from the right side by Mandy Daschbach (Telford/Christopher Dock) to bring the score to 3-1.
The Haven tacked on one more goal in the second period, Kellie Kulina (Hummelstown/Lower Dauphin) scoring on one of the team’s four corner chances on assists from Sweger and Katie Stewartz (Boyertown/Boyertown). |
Towson’s Christina Armer played just over 62 minutes guarding the cage and collected five saves. Lock Haven’s Melissa Stubblefield (Carmel, N.Y./Carmel) went the distance, totaling three saves.
Lock Haven will next travel to Lehigh University on Wed., September 1, for a 7 p.m. contest. Towson’s next contest is a trip to University of Maryland-Baltimore County on September 1.
