(Bethlehem, Pa. ) - Two
second-half goals within a four-minute span lifted the
Lock Haven University field hockey team over Lehigh
University, 2-1, in its first road game of the new
season. The Lady Eagles improve to 2-0 overall.
Defense was the story in the first half as
both teams took a total of only four shots including three
by the Haven. The LHU offense kicked into gear in
the second half, however, firing nine shots at the goal
following the intermission.
Senior Kellie Kulina (Hummelstown/Lower Dauphin) broke the scoreless
tie in the 52nd minute, notching her first goal of the
season off a penalty corner play assisted by Sarah
Huber (Plymouth Meeting/Christopher Dock)
and Katie Stewartz
(Boyertown/Boyertown).
In the 56th minute, freshman midfielder
Renee Kemmerer (Nineveh, N.Y./Afton) shot the ball
past the Lehigh keeper for an unassisted score, raising
the lead to 2-0 in favor of the Lady Eagles.
Lehigh threatened with a goal in the 66th
minute of action, but the Haven defense held to go on to
the 2-1 victory.
Defensively, Lock Haven limited Lehigh to
only four shots over the contest. Keeper Melissa
Stubblefield (Carmel, N.Y./Carmel) turned away two
shots while allowing just one goal. Lehigh’s Jeanine Hoff
made nine saves.
The Lock Haven field hockey team (2-0)
remains on the road this weekend, traveling to the Boston
College Tournament to play the University of Vermont at 5
p.m. on Sat., Sept. 4, and Radford College on Sun., Sept.
5, at 3 p.m. |
