PHILADELPHIA –
The Lock Haven University field hockey team (8-1) was
taken the distance tonight as they defeated La Salle
University in overtime, 1-0. Freshman Samantha Stoyer
(Lititz/Manheim Township) scored the second goal of her
career to give the Lady Eagles their first Division I
overtime win.
The teams played steady,
traveling the length of the field throughout the first
half, but neither team could capitalize on shots. In the
first half, the Explorers out shot the Lady Eagles 7-4.
After the break, Lock
Haven seemed to control the ball in front of La Salle's
cage for much of the half, however the Lady Eagles
managed just four shots in the period. La Salle
attempted just one shot in the second half.
In the overtime period,
La Salle gave up three penalty corners, allowing Lock
Haven to spend much of the extra frame in front on the
Explorers cage. After a scramble in front of La Salle
goalkeeper Colleen Bolger, Lock Haven's Amanda
Alderfer (Harleysville/Souderton) took the rebound
and passed it off to Stoyer who knocked in the game
winner at the 79:09 mark of the contest.
LHU goalkeeper Megan
Barclay (Pompton Plains, N.J./Pequannock) made six
stops for her first win of the year and Bolger made 10
saves in the loss.
Stoyer, Alderfer,
Barclay and the rest of the Lady Eagles are back in
action Friday, Sept. 24 at 5 p.m. as they host Robert
Morris University. |
