Stewartz's Strikes Lead Field Hockey Past Quinnipiac, 2-1

HAMDEN, Conn. – The Lock Haven University field hockey team (14-1, 4-0 NEC) remained undefeated in its first season of Northeast Conference play, thanks to two goals by senior Katie Stewartz (Boyertown/Boyertown). Her goals helped defeat Quinnipiac University (3-11, 2-3 NEC), 2-1 tonight.

The Haven took a 1-0 halftime lead on Stewartz’s first strike, a tap in of a penalty corner rebound. Stewartz added her second goal of the game, and the season, on another penalty corner just over 16 minutes into the second half. She redirected a shot from junior Nikki Sweger (Dauphin/Central Dauphin East) into the side of the cage.

Quinnipiac’s Jill DiSanti followed with a goal of her own, but it wasn’t enough, as the Lady Eagle defense held strong for the final 12 minutes.

Senior Melissa Stubblefield (Carmel, N.Y./Carmel) made seven stops in eight tries for her 13th win of the season. Erin McKay made seven saves in nine tries in the loss.

Stewartz, Sweger, Stubblefield and the rest of the Lady Eagles are back in action at Siena College on Sunday, Oct. 10 at 1 p.m.
