Stewartz’s Shot Stops Stags, 1-0

FAIRFIELD, Conn. The Lock Haven University field hockey team’s (18-1, 8-0 NEC) dominance of the Northeast Athletic Conference (NEC) continued today, as they downed Fairfield University (7-12, 5-3 NEC) 1-0 in overtime. Senior Katie Stewartz (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown) notched the game-winning goal in the 72nd minute.

A scoreless tie at the end of regulation, the Lock Haven defensive line came up big, allowing just two shots all game.

On the Lady Eagles’ seventh penalty corner of the contest, Stewartz recorded her third goal of the season on a pass from Nikki Sweger (Dauphin, Pa./Central Dauphin East). Two of Stewartz’s goals have been game-winners.

Lady Eagle goalkeeper Melissa Stubblefield (Carmel, N.Y./Carmel) made one save for her fifth shutout of the season and 23rd of her career, tying the senior for fourth in school history. The win gives the Haven a perfect 8-0 conference record in their first season of Division I play.

Stewartz, Sweger, Stubblefield and the rest of the Lady Eagles are back in action on Tuesday, Nov. 2 at 7 p.m. as they travel to Lafayette College for their final game of the season.
