LOCK HAVEN, Pa. –
Out-shooting them 21-7, the Lock Haven University field
hockey team (1-0) downed the University of Vermont (1-1) 3-0 today (Aug.
28), at Charlotte Smith Field. The stifling LHU defense allowed just one
shot on goal.
Junior
Mandy Daschbach (Telford,
Pa./Christopher Dock) got the scoring started just 5:50 in, as she
used her high school track star speed for a breakaway on a loose ball,
making one move right before firing it past the Catamount keeper.
The Lady Eagles would pick up the
scoring quickly in the second half, as junior
Sarah Huber (Plymouth
Meeting, Pa./Christopher Dock) re-directed a sophomore
Blair L. Wynne (Arima,
Trinidad & Tobago/Sangre Grande) shot on the left side for the 2-0
lead with just over 30 minutes left in the game.
Huber would finish the day with
three points after senior
Courtney Hughes
(Schwenksville, Pa./Souderton) took her entry
pass directly off the penalty corner and fired it to the right side of
the cage for the 3-0 victory.
Haven goalkeeper
Becca Yerkes
(West Grove, Pa./Avon Grove) recorded just one
save, but thwarted a few more cross-pass attempts for her first career
shutout and victory (1-0). Vermont’s Erin Hickey made 10 saves in 13
tries to fall to 1-1.
Daschbach, Huber, Wynne, Hughes,
Yerkes and the rest of the Lady Eagles are back in action Wednesday,
Aug. 31 at 7 p.m. when they play host to Lehigh University (1-1).
